Hello, I am asking about whether I should cross enroll or not for spring semester.

I am doing mathematics, and my last pre-requisite, Discrete Mathematics, is not offered at my CC. However, it is offered at another one that is a little further but doable.

I mean the answer should seemingly be without a doubt yes right? Since more pre-reqs = better chance + save money and not have to take at a 4-year

In my case, the college I would like to cross-enroll in is PCC (Pasadena City College), whose registration for spring classes starts on the 20th for new people (yes very close).

The only second thoughts I have are
- the class is getting pretty filled. just yesterday it was 25/30 (only one class is offered)
- Discrete Mathematics isn't required for admission--on assist it says "Note: This course is not required for admission." But of course, it would certainly better your chances, it's just that I might not even get in
- and it's just that staying at my CC would be a lot more convenient gas and resource wise

I have to mention, my CC has winter intersession and PCC doesn't. I kind of like the winter intersession because you can get ahead. In my case, it's not essential, but it's nice to take extra classes (I am 2~3 classes short of IGETC and would much rather take art history in an inter-session than a full-long semester...).

Is it worth to enroll at PCC in the spring? (though I have less than a week to make my decision). Or anyone with similar experience in cross enrolling/doing courses across multiple CCs? Thanks!

I’m pretty certain that most UC schools don’t require completion of discrete mathematics for math majors; that class is more pertinent to computer science and maybe electrical engineering.

Check on assist.org the requirements for your major that the UC to which you wish to transfer to has imposed. If they neither require nor recommend discrete math for your major, I’d say it’s not worth it.

If, however, assist.org says it’s recommended, then that’s a different story.

@Cayton yeah it’s actually only UC Berkeley that asks for it [which I’m interested in!] but again, it only recommends it and doesn’t require it. UCLA (and other UCs I am applying to) doesn’t require it, and technically I’m done with all my pre-reqs for those. Just UCB that is the one stickler

Oh also I just checked, Discrete Math is full at PCC so that pretty much destroys any desire to cross enroll anyways :E

The thing is, assist says that the equivalent of Berkeley’s Discrete Math is offered at my college (Mt. SAC), but I checked and asked counselors and they aren’t offering it this spring (and they haven’t offered that class in quite a few years actually). So it probably isn’t updated or something.

I am just worried that if I put that I’m not going to take Discrete Math despite having an entire semester of classes to fill, it’ll look bad because assist says it offers it and it’s even listed in Mt SAC’s catalog, just not offered.

Could I put that I plan to take it in the spring but I couldn’t because they didn’t offer it? I know that’s kind of being sneaky because I know they don’t have it. But…? Hmm

I’d explain in the additional comments section of the UC application that discrete math isn’t really available at your CC or at adjacent CCs. You should be fine.

It’s best to be honest, so I recommend that you don’t state that you plan to take the class in spring when you know you won’t be able to.
