CSU Grades

Ok so I had applied as an incoming freshman for the fall 2017 semester at CSU Fresno. Currently I have not heard back from them but I had applied on time and had selected Biology as my major. I have a 3.12 GPA and have never gotten a D until my senior year. We are on the Semester system so I have 3 classes for half a year and then 3 new classes for rest of the year. The D that I got was in the second part of my first semester and I plan on retaking the class at the end of the year in hopes of a C. I know that CSU schools don’t accept any grade less than a D in any A-G course. Do you think they’ll look at the D and automatically not accept me? Or will they give me conditional acceptance?

Which class did you receive the D? Is this a final semester grade and will it be on your transcript? CSU’s will accept you conditionally and expect you to maintain your GPA and pass all a-g courses with a C or higher. That being said, if your D is your final semester grade and it is in either Math or Foreign Language, they will probably wait until your final semester and see if you can get it up to a C.

Unless they ask specifically for Mid-year grades, they will not see the D. I would however find out your options by contacting admissions with a what if scenario.

I had received the D in world literature. Yes it is a final semester grade and it is on my report card. I had also gotten a D in Pre calculus but that was after I had completed my required 3 years.

Are you saying you have 2 D’s Senior year? Regardless if you have completed the minimum a-g course requirements, the CSU’s expect you to pass all a-g courses with a C or higher to maintain your provisional admission. Some CSU’s are more lenient than others, but make sure you have a backup plan because if you do have 2 D’s Senior year and you are accepted, your chances are high that you will be rescinded once CSU Fresno see’s your final transcript if you have 2 D’s. I would definitely contact admissions and find what are your options.

From CSU Fresno Website regarding Provisional admission. Specifics are not spelled out regarding grades so call admissions directly and find out your options.

:::::::::
Conditional/Provisional Admission - Freshmen. California State University, Fresno may provisionally admit first-time freshman applicants based on their academic preparation through the junior year of high school and planned coursework for the senior year. The campus will monitor the final terms of study to ensure that admitted students complete their secondary school studies satisfactorily, including the required college preparatory subjects, and graduate from high school. Students are required to submit an official transcript after graduation to certify that all course work has been satisfactorily completed. Official high school transcripts must be received prior to deadline set by the University. In no case may documentation of high school graduation be received any later than the census date for a student’s first term of CSU enrollment. A campus may rescind admission decisions, cancel financial aid awards, withdraw housing contracts and cancel any University registration for students who are found to be ineligible after the final transcript has been evaluated.

Applicants will qualify for regular (non-provisional) admission when the university verifies that they have graduated and received a diploma from high school, have a qualifiable minimum eligibility index, have completed the comprehensive pattern of college preparatory “a-g” subjects, and, if applying to an impacted program or campus, have met all supplementary criteria.
