Current Cornellian Here- Ask Me Any Question!!

I think ur safe just requesting a single. From my experience, if u request a single ur pretty much gauranteed to get one. If it just so happens that you dont, you can always try to switch after u are assigned your room. A bunch of people switched on the "class of" website after being assigned their room.

sadafbahaza- whoa a lot of questions lol. Yes there are a lot of frat parties. There will be no problem at all finding a party, I can assure you of that. A car is okay to have. There really isn't a point since everything you could ever need is on North as a freshman. The dorms vary, see the pics I posted before of the different dorms. Most of the professors are great and easily accessible if you need to talk with them after class, during office hours, or by email.

go with a single.

goldenbird- just request a single and you will probably get one. if you do get a double for some reason you can trade over the classof site and the university w ill allow you to direct room switches if two people agree on it. don't request balch unless you are sure you want to be there. they do have nice singles as long as you don't mind living with all girls.

i still don't get it, why do people regret having a doubles dorm??? :S

they realize that they have to live with another person or more they have never met before and they might not become their best friend and conflicts arise that they have to deal with for an entire year?

bah, that's half the fun of living in a double.

is there any monetary advantage to being in a double? like cost is split or something? or do you pay the same for a double as you pay for a single.

you pay a little more for a single but it's worth it

Some of the people I know are best friends with their roomates so you always run the risk of that not happening because u picked a single. I for one have 3 roomates and I'm not "best friends" with any of em...but I have a GIGANTIC room so it's worth it. 3 of my friends living in a triple are BEST FRIENDS and if they didn't live together who knows if I would even be their friends (and we r really good friends)...so you never know. If you want a double then get one. I wouldn't ever get a single myself...especially since after Freshman year you have a say in who you room with. But if you want a single go for it, I just posted this so doublers don't get discouraged. Good times no matter wat!

How much more expensive for a single? How is the wireless internet on campus?

I believe that a single is about $800 more, per year. I also believe that a single is worth it. I don't care if you're the most anti-social person on the planet, there's no shortage of students roaming around looking to be your friend.

The way I see it, having a single has many benefits, with virtually no drawbacks (except perhaps you can get locked out if you forget your key). You have your own space if you need it, but if you don't, friends are only about 10 steps away.

Sometimes people do, in fact, become best friends with their roomate. But, considering the fact that Cornell essentially matches people randomly, chances are that you'll be better friends wtih some of the other 13,000 students at Cornell. So, I'd say a majority of students would say they "get along" with their roomates with few issues, and small minorities either love (as a best friend) or hate their roomate.

patwu, as for wireless internet, you can get it in every library, and most major buildings on campus.

there's no wireless in the dorms?

of course there is wireless in the dorms. The hotspots are located in the lounges, but much of the time you can still pick up a signal from anywhere in the hall, this is especially true in mews and KBC. Anyways, in your dorm you have a hookup with CAT5 to the resnet, so you don't really need wireless.

wireless sucks atleast in the high rises.

You can also hook a router up in your room and use that signal from anywhere on your hall.

how does being in a single vs. double impact financial aid? will i have to pay more, or will this be covered by my rather hefty (44+k) financial aid package?

How is the Cornell Library? Can we rent multimedia (DVDs, movies, etc.)?

The libraries are great places to study. I'll admit that I don't go to the libraries as often as I should. But the two most popular libraries people go to are Uris and Olin. Uris is good if you like to study in silence. Olin's more for people who like a little background noise (ie. people talking quietly) while working. The Libe Cafe (which is in Olin) is where you can work while eating; it's definitely a more relaxed setting. There are a lot of resources for research--tons of books in the stacks. I'm just providing a really general overview. I'm sure there's someone who could give you more details if you need them.

As for multimedia, for freshmen, I heard that you can rent movies from the townhouse community center. I've never actually been there though, so I'm not totally sure. Lots of people use DC++ to download movies. Again, I can't give you specifics about DC++ since I don't actually use it, but there are plenty of people who would be able to tell you more.

EDIT:
My opinion on living in a double vs. living in a single: I live in a double, and I love it. My roommate and I are good friends, and we complement each other pretty well. Most people I know who live with a roommate are happy. Of course, there are horror stories, but people are generally satisfied. Having a roommate was important to me since I thought it was an essential part of the college experience.
That being said, people in singles do have a lot of benefits. Privacy, obviously. Also, it's not hard to be social if you're in a single--you won't be left out of anything. As long as you make an effort to get to know the other people in your dorm, you'll make friends.
Just choose what you want. It's all based on your personality and what you're comfortable with.

is there a salon anywhere around cornell that's accessible? (trivial question...i know lol)
