Curious to hear about Louisiana…where the ACT is the preferred test.

My D’13 took it as a freshman last fall, got a 192 with no prep, so we’re just curious at this point. This year she is prepping and hope to increase her score big time. Last 3 years LA’s cutoff was 206-208. My S’09 took it as a soph and jr, but there was NO real communication of the wonderful potential benefits associated with PSAT/NMSF, and only a handful of kids took the test.

That is not until I discovered CC and all of you wise folks here!

In fact, I learned from this board that the results were sent to the schools in early December. I had to ask at my D’s school for her results b/c the GC was just going to wait and not distribute them until after Christmas holidays!!

On the other hand, everyone in our district takes the ACT-EXPLORE test as 8th graders and the PLAN test as sophomores…

Anyway…hoping someone from LA posts something soon…

I pray for all you folks who are close to the cutoff for your states that your kids make it!!

Could someone who has the packet let those who are waiting know

a) the deadline for finalist applications to be submitted, and

b) what essay(s) are required?

Thanks! Heard unofficially that DS made the cut, but they don’t have the online login passwords for them yet. Since our GC is brand new to this, I’m not relying on that info until I see the packet, and haven’t told him yet.

GL to everyone still waiting!

Aimbogame, that was sweet of your son! Congrats!

Any word from CA?

Why did “KY” get dropped from the list?

I have a question. We finally got the package and the cover letter mentions that we can’t share the information with anyone but family. Does posting cut off scores on this forum violate this request?

ZAP - Do you really not know the answer to this?

Sounds like a reasonable inquiry-- is the information supposed to be kept close?

This is my take on it:
The info shared is essentially de-identified. It is undoubtedly unverified. At its essence, it is probably unreliable, i.e., no one would really act on it without a second or third source to back it up. It is gratuitiously provided. There is no financial or commercial reward associated with providing it. Unfortunately, it could be a bunch of lies, as, in providing it, there is no obligation for truth. It provides a person’s anonymous, subjective, untraceable experience to someone who is willing to accept the info and do with it what they think is appropriate.

So, I think it is okay to share. But, we probably all need to use our own compass.

What exactly does the letter say about not sharing? My guess is that it’s not sharing the name of a semi-finalist outside of the family before NM does its press release. But I haven’t seen it, so that’s a total guess…

^I suppose disclosing could pre-empt NMSC’s press release.

BTW you can look up the stats on PSAT performance for the 2009 for your state vs the nation on these summary reports:

[College-Bound Juniors 2009 - PSAT/NMSQT](SAT Suite of Assessments – Reports | College Board)

While you can find a percentile for a 5-pt range of scores for each subtest, there are no statistics for the overall selection index percentile, either nationally or by state.

However, it is informative to compare the highest with the lowest states. A 75-80 on the Math subtest could be in the top 2.5% among boys in Massachusetts, but a 70-80 might be in the top 1% among boys in Missisippi.

It does feel unfair if you have a close score in a state with a high cut-off–on the other hand some states might have very few kids who qualify if NM used national cutoffs. I guess this is the purpose of Commended, to give some kind of honor to the kid who missed SF.

For those of you who lost by a point, this might be of some consolation:

[NACAC Joins National Merit Critics | FairTest](http://fairtest.org/nacac-joins-national-merit-critics)

Hey, momofsongbird, I just go this text, “I made national merit, so you can calm down now” from DD. Not quite as moving or poetic as the boy who gave his packet to his Mom for her birthday!!!

I hope your wait is also over, momofsongbird! and to all of the others who are waiting, as well. My best wishes to everyone for much success.

For our end, a 218 made it in Illinois.

mariepuff: it’s really helpful that you are keeping track of all this. One note: the abbreviation for Alabama is AL, not AB.

Congrats to your D, mariepuff!

a) the deadline for finalist applications to be submitted, and

b) what essay(s) are required?

The packet says that we fill out parts D-F and return to school by 9.11.10.
The essay is very broad:
describe an experience you have had, a person who has influenced you, or an obstacle you have overcome. Explain why it is meaningful to you. Use your own words and limit your response to the space below. Print your essay using 10 point font size and affix securely on all four corners with nonglare tape or write legibly in ink on this form.

I feel like it is fair to post since they are all due the same day, but some already have it.

The school must submit by 10.13.10

My son just texted to say he was just told he’s a SF with a 215 in Illinois

I believe that is the exact some essay prompt as last year. Contrats to all who have received good news, and good luck to those who are still waiting!
