cut-off scores/semi-finalist announcements

Hang in there, formykids! A lot of us in the same boat!

Don’t fret too much , those of you who haven’t gotten any news. Our school always has several Semi-Finalists and Commended students, and our counselors are very on top of it. Nothing has been said yet.

Sad news from Oregon. GC called NM today and 213 does not qualify for semifinalist. Sorry I Don’t know the cutoff.

Updating OR

Does anyone have any predictions of SC’s cut-off? Last year’s was 211 and the scores seemed to be down according to the state reports. I’m sitting on the line with a 212, our guidance office seems to have “misplaced” the packets so no one at my school knows yet.

@dabrain13

I think you’re in good shape with a 212 in SC if last year’s cutoff was a 211.

CONFIRMING LOWEST POSSIBLE IN SCORE IS A 212.

I received a 212, got a letter. 211 scorers did not get a letter. Confirmed also by counselor.

DarkDwarf: in another post you indicate you live in IN. Are you confirming SC?

I don’t want to kill anyone’s enthusiasm or hope if you’re just one point away from last year’s cutoff in your state…BUT

LA’s cutoff last year was 207. This year it is 210… This is good overall that LA kids are doing better on PSAT, but bad for those kids who got a 208 or 209 this year and thought they were in good shape!!

I’ve read that a 3 point increase doesn’t happen very often, but as you can see it can happen.

Good luck to those still waiting to hear!!

Someone mentioned about how they have a system of choosing how many people from each state can move on as a NMSF. Does that mean that even though you made that cutoff score, you may not neccessarily get a packet? I know there’s a limit of 16,000 people per year. If there are anymore than that (even if they reached the cutoff score), they still won’t make it? If so, that’s a little disheartening. :(

If you make the cutoff score for your state, you will be a NMSF.

GC said 214 for IL a few days ago, just to confirm.
Very exciting.

Congrats! My son has 216 in WI as well. His school had 31 NMF last year, so we feel fortunate he got it. Well done.

My congrats were to Kabizzle in Wisconsin with a 216!

Descartez,

I’m pretty sure Dark Dwarf was confirming IN, not SC. He said, in his post, “lowest possible IN score” and “confirmed by counselor.”

I think it was just a coincidence that the person prior posted about a 212 in SC.

Thank you, SimpleLife. I do believe you are right and it is all so clear now. I read “IN” as a preposition, not an abbreviation, and then linked it to the post prior. One of the many hazards of all-caps, I suppose.

Here is the message from CA…

My S is confirmed by GC at his school that he is a NMSC semifinalist. His PSAT score is 220. GC does not tell us the cut off score for CA. The deadline for our school to submit application to NMF office is October 13.

Everyone who makes the cutoff score in a state makes NMSF.

NMCorp usually sets the cutoff mark at the top 1% for each state (some NE states are different because of too many high scoring kids).

In cases where the state cutoff number is low, it just means that NMCorp had to go that low to include 1% from that state.

I got my packet today with a 218 in New York. I can’t verify the 217 cutoff someone mentioned earlier, though. That sounds right though.
