Got my packet with a 211 in New Mexico!!!

As far as I know, all states are allocated NMSF slots in the same way – according to their share of the nation’s HS graduates in any year (range in 2007-2008: 56% in DC to 89.6% in WI). Considered on a national basis this is about 1% of all test-takers (or about 0.5% share of all graduates), but high-graduation rate states claim more slots than this and low-graduation rate states fewer. I have never heard of an exception being made for NE (New England? Northeast?) states.

This usually is set to be equal to the highest cut-off score among the individual states.

Commended (national cutoff) = 201
Any person with a score equal to or higher than this cutoff who is not an NMSF receives commended status.

Man! I’m a 206 in Wisconsin. I was hoping it would drop a couple points this year. Oh, well.

Is 201 for commended confirmed? I hope to be commended this year…

That Rhode Island one can’t be true, can it? Last year it was 217… well, I hope it is true. I went to my guidance counselor today, and she didn’t know if the school got the list of semi-finalists yet.

D got 215 in PA and not called down for packet - probably commended but the other high scorers will be notified on the 15th? SAT 2230 and ACT 32; also top 5% and 4.0 unweighted GPA - any other scholarships available to commended scholars?

Sigh…still waiting for the packet at small Illinois private. Sitting on a 220, so we know she made it, but the packet would be nice. Maybe she’ll get it around 3pm on Wed. Honestly, I don’t see the point in making the kids (not to mention parents) sweat it out like this. Sheesh!

Also - anybody agree with me that this info should be sent directly to student and/or parents at home address? Whose test results are these anyway?

I’ll just point out that the PSAT, unlike the SAT, has always been administered directly through the high schools. They schedule the room, receive the booklets, administer and collect the exams, and receive the results for distribution. I’m not sure why it evolved that way but it appears that the College Board and NMSC see the tests, at least in part, as belonging to the schools.

The poster claimed to be a student at an RI private school. If that school was a boarding school with more than 50% OOS students, it would fall into a different category than “typical” RI high schools. So it could be that the cutoff score reported, 211, doesn’t pertain to the bulk testers in RI. But, then again, it shouldn’t have a cutoff score lower than its host state (if I understand correctly).

In general small states with few testers will show more variability in cutoff scores than will larger states.

I hear you, Descartesz. To be honest, I’m probably just complaining because our school is taking so long to notify my D. If she had heard last week or the week before, as many posters did, I probably wouldn’t have a problem with the results going through the schools. At this point, it’s just the frustration talking! :)

Thank you guys for answering my question! I made it in TX, but the GCs are taking forever! Maybe they are waiting until the Sept. 15th date where all of the cut-off scores are going to be mentioned. If they don’t say something by then, perhaps I shall just ask.
Congratulations to everyone (the students and parents of students) for becoming an NMSF! :D

Our HS is taking its sweet time about announcing, too. A neighboring school district (WI), did inform their students. Oh well… My sons take this in stride, it’s just me who can’t stand the wait! Sad, really :)

Hey, the cut-off for LA here says 210 but I have an LA friend who made it with, I believe a 208. I know it was 206<score<210, and I’m about 87% positive it was a 208.
At any rate, just wanted to say 210 is apparently not the cut-off here in Lewzeeanna.
(Not that it matters because I think there are likely around 10 CCers from LA, and they probably already know whether or not they’re NMSFs. =P)

Do schools usually wait until Sept. 15? D: I know I got it for sure, but I’m an impatient person so…

To aleader…re: LA cutoff of 210…

My D is only a sophomore, but I asked the senior GC in our school (who I worked with when my S graduated two years ago) and she told me the cutoff was 210…which I thought was a big jump up from last year’s 207.

208 or 206 would be more in line with what I was expecting.

Maybe someone in our school got a 210 and she just told me that was the cutoff.

Anyway, now I am curious to hear from other LA folks…

OMG, I can’t believe LA went up that much! Our HS usually has over 30 NMSF. It will be interesting to see the number this year.

Massachusetts update:

No paper confirmation yet, but my child’s HS publicly recognized semi-finalists in an assembly this morning, and my child (who got a 221) was not recognized. I think that means we can conclude that 221 in MA did not make the cut off this year?

Of course, the GCs also told the kids that those who would be commended should have already gotten letters – and we haven’t gotten anything.

The GCs will not tell anyone the actual cut off score, so I’m sorry not to help those with 222 & 223 still hanging on for confirmation.

D in mass sitting at 222. cutoff was 221 last two years in mass and 223 in 2007 when my S also got a 222 and missed by one. could we be snake bit twice? I am guessing she will miss since the international is 223 and that is set at the top state number which is usually mass. Oh well.
