I just saw in naviance that the cutoff in Texas this year is 217.

According to GC, Utah’s cutoff is 203–only 2 points above the national commended cutoff. Just goes to show you what being dead last in funding per pupil buys you.

Let’s consider our TX cutoff reliable for now until more definite information presents itself.

Updating UT.

Finally got my packet today in SC with a 212. Not sure what the cutoff is though.

Daughter made it with a 218 in Maine. No idea what the cutoff is. Guidance counselor pulled her out of class, and handed her the paper (1 sheet) in the hall, with a “Congratulations! You’re a Merit Semifinalist!”

Can confirm that 216 is a semi-finalist in Texas.

DD finally received packet today…and only because she was in the college office making an appointment to meet with her college counselor. When the secretary heard her name, she said, “oh, as long as you’re here, you can take this.” A bit lacking in ceremony, but nice to receive anyway (NY).

My son was notified that he’s a SF today in MA. He scored 223, but he did
not learn the cutoff score.

I got the letter yesterday in TX with a 215, so 215 should be the correct cutoff, unless someone made it with a 214. But we find out today, don’t we? Now I just have to wait for the packet. :D

Can confirm definitively that cutoff in NJ is 221 - son’s friend named SF at 221, and other friend not at 220. Son got a 223 so he is in as well :-)

RI is in fact 211 and did in fact drop from 217 last year.

My son got his packet and made it with little or no room to spare.

This whole NMSF thing is senseless when someone with a 221 or 222 (in MA) doesn’t make it while they would if they lived in any of the other 49 states.

The methodology should have been top 1% of test takers in each state… emphasis test takers of PSAT, not 1% of high school juniors in that state. States where only 10% of juniors take it means like 10% of the PSAT takers get NMSF status since they want 1% of total juniors to get NMSF.

If they don’t get 16K NMSF qualifiers with this approach they could just adjust each year it to say top 2 or 3% in each state.

Given some rewards are so high for NMF (free tuition to Alabama for instance) it’s seems pretty unfair way of awardiing the NMSF status.

Updating MA.

Thanks for the info beermug! I called up that number and the lady was so nice (I’d say more helpful and accomodating than the school office). Although there were two posts here about MO cutoff, I still had to hear the official result to be sure. Yeah!!!

I agree . it is amazing that most people think that it is a NATIONAL Merit and not a state by state award. What scholarships are available to the commended student with a psat sore of 220?
