Nothing for commended!!! If you can’t say NMF then psat is meaningless, gotta just work off SAT/ACT & GPA for scholarships.

^ Not true. Many of the top commended students will receive corporate awards. But I wouldn’t worry about the small amounts awarded through the NMS program. If your D or S did well on the PSAT then they should/did do well on the SAT. With a high SAT, a 4.0 GPA and a challenging course load (I did 10 APs in 3 years of high school) your D/S will get GREAT offers from the top state and private schools in the country.

Thanks for the phone number - I called and cutoff for Pa is 216.

Just made it. I am wondering how much prepping for the test influences the outcome. S did no prep at all. Friend has her s prepping to take PSAT in sophomore year for practice and will follow up with more PSAT and SAT prep courses.

Thank you beermug for the phone number. I just called and they were very nice to tell me the cutoff score in Oregon, they even offered to verify my child’s name.

I called the National Merit Scholarship Programme and was told that the cut off for NMSF status for juniors in boarding schools in TN who had taken the PSAT in 2009 (HS Class of 2011) was 215.

Received my packet today! So psyched [even if it is a bit late]!!!

I can 100% verify that NY’s cutoff is 217. I received a sheet in the packet that stated this, and my mom called earlier today to find out.

Agreed. imagine having 2 kids 3 years apart get 222s on their PSATs in Mass and missing by one each time. Neither ever took an SAT prep course. Sad part is they both had the highest scores in their HS. we are in rural western ma - not the wealthy eatern suburbs and have more in common with VT then Boston. The guidance counselors and classes here aren’t what they are in the east.

Confirming LA: Just called the number posted and it is 210 for LA. The man was very nice and said that 201-209 are commended and 210 and above are semi-finalists.

So a three point jump from last year in LA!! Our school’s GC was correct…

Staple: I really do feel for you as the mom of two top scholar sons whose very high scores would have qualified for NMSFstatus in most states. Our two sons are NMSF (last year and this year) with scores below yours. On the whole, I think the rationale for allocating spots by state–if I understand Descartez’s through explanation about–gradutation rates, etc.–is sound, and reasonably fair–it breaks down when stories like yours expose the limitations. Nonetheless, your sons will do well whereever they go to school or work.

My D did no prepping for the PSAT whatsoever. We were so out of the loop back then, neither of us even knew it was tied to NMSF. We got lucky – she got 220 and our cutoff is 214.

But you can bet she prepped her head off for the ACT. Got a 34. We’re happy.

Staple, that’s just plain awful! I can only imagine how you (and your kids) felt! I know they say, “life isn’t fair,” but boy, that’s a tough one to swallow. Hope they got (or get) FA goodies based on other things. They must be excellent students!
