cut-off scores/semi-finalist announcements

Usually a guidance counselor (GC) or school administrator contacts the student with notification. Schools are sent Finalist application packets for each semi-finalist qualifier.

NMSC gave the whole list to press 2 days ago. Our city new paper published the list. I also saw some other city’s list.

Staple…I really do feel bad for you and your kids… It really isn’t a fair system, and that’s from someone in a lower-scoring state=LA.

My friends and I have a saying when something isn’t fair for our kids, “It builds character.” But after a while, we say…I’m so tired of my kids’ having so much ‘character!’

The good news is your kids must have great SAT scores and hopefully that will be enough to get them good merit packages wherever they choose to go…

So remember how I got a 215 in MI but my principal told me I wasn’t on the list?
Yeah, my mom called the NMSC today and confirmed that my name IS on the list. And all the semi-finalists’ names were in the local paper today, too, including mine. Interesting; I’m still confused as to why/how my school didn’t receive my name (we have another semi from our school and they got his name, so…? I thought the schools received them all at once?). I guess it got lost or something. Now to inform my school! ^^

Thought some of you might enjoy reading the press releases from some of the perennial powerhouses … this link is Montgomery County Maryland (Blair HS alone has 40, down from 53 last year)

[Semifinalists Named in the 2011 National Merit® Scholarship Program - Connected Communities](<a href=“Payday Loans Online | Paycheck Loans and Quick Cash Advances”>Payday Loans Online | Paycheck Loans and Quick Cash Advances)

DS received his letter today. The counselor confirmed that the qualifying score for Virginia is 218.

He goes to Thomas Jefferson high school for Science and Technology and the school has 125 semifinalists this year (class size is 428).

@ Spazzy: I don’t think my HS received my name either. I haven’t specifically talked to anyone concerning the National Merit competition yet, but when I went to school today people just acted like nothing had happened, even though the NMSC representative I talked to earlier this morning confirmed that I was a Semifinalist.

Nebraska’s cutoff is 210, according to my counselor.

I did no prep as well, yet still made it (if anything the night before, I stayed up really late reading a novel. Hee hee). I don’t really believe in the SATs or prepping, but there has to be some “standardized” way of choosing students, right? Pfft.

This is really interesting. Nothing today from the school. I confirmed online that the score is 227. No broad announcements in Mass. I think my student is aware that things were released today. I don’t want to ask the school or the student. What a pain.

FINALLY, my D got notification here in Illinois. Still no packet, mind you, but a nice announcement over the school PA. Now she needs to track down the paperwork…

I called the National Merit yesterday. Official cutoff for MO is 210.

I called this morning and verified that the Idaho cut off is defiinitely 208. Our counselors have been at a conference and daughter still hasn’t been notified, but the man I spoke to in the NM office said that several schools have been operating under the misconception that they had to wait to notify students until after the national announcement date (Sept. 15th), when in fact they could have given out the packets as soon as they received them. Perhaps the result of living in ACT country?

I wonder why my son’s school and some other schools haven’t given the packets yet. Isn’t there a deadline and an essay to think about?

Yes there is a deadline for submission…and your school is LATE for giving packets out…the packets were supposed to be given by now. Call and ask.

D found out yesterday…on the way to school… name announced on the radio!

Once at school, many teachers and friends congratulate her and told her they read it in a larger newspaper that morning…by the end of the day, she finally asked her principal and GC. Principal found the packet in a pile on his desk. I guess this is not a big deal to them… it was to us. We celebrated last night!

For those whose schools are late notifying the students: The school’s deadline is around October 13; on the preprinted letter, the student’s deadline is stated to be September 10, unless the school sets a later deadline. (My daughter’s school set October 1 as her deadline.) The form is online and doesn’t take long, particularly if you already are working on applications, have written an essay and have a resume.
