CWRU: Weatherhead or UMCP: Smith

In terms of job-ops, overall experience, and recruiters wich of the two is better?

I'm In-state for UMCP and I've Calculated that Case Western will cost about 2k-3k more a year than UMCP (after all the fin aid)

Thanks for any replies!

I don't know much about Case's business school except that it is pretty good. About smith, I think their opportunities for jobs and internships are pretty high because it is so close to DC and is probably the best business school in the DC area and holds a pretty good name here. I am sure you will have more loans at case than at UMD and I have heard case sucks in the social department. Again, I don't know much about case so that could be way off. I am a type of person that needs a sports team to watch and UMD is arguably the best place to watch sports, especially when they are good. Case is a fairly simple school to get into but it is a really good school. They have a lower peer assessment rating than UMD though. I would visit both schools and choose. Maybe you will get some type of scholarship from UMD?

I got 19k scholarship+3K loan for Case

and NOTHING for UMCP, so cost-wise they are even

The smaller environement, coop/internship, and location (urban), are making me lean more towards Case. I'm gunna visit Case in a few weeks....

Any1 else know anything?

Any1at all?

Before making a decision between the schools, go visit both. Also look at the financial state of both schools and then make you decision. You might find yourself happier and more secure closer to home.

I live ften minutes from downtown Cleveland and my sister went to Weatherhead. It has a really great education and my sister rose through the ranks of Natinal City corporation quickly with that diploma. And Cleveland has such a great downtown atmosphere, very inviting and fun, not to mention it's one of the most inexpensive places to live besides, like, Alabama. But you won't find a great social atmosphere through Case, you'll have to find it through vibrant Cleveland, just so you know.

Wow, congrats on the 19k! Are you sure Maryland will not give you anything? On the Maryland board on this site someone said last year merit awards were not given until march 18th(today) to March 25 and departmental(I think smith might give out something to the people they admitted into their freshman direct class) in the first week of April last year...

Otherwise if you like the smaller environment I would suggest you go there. I mean Maryland is going to be 30,000 undergrads vs case with like 5000. No reason to not go to an environment you don't like.

Smith is better

Smith is ranked 22 by USNWR for undergrad biz and Weatherhead is ranked 30. Do with that what you will.

One other thing to note about Case is the current financial and administration problems which could linger the entire college years of the OP. The following is two opening sentences from a story in this week's Give & Take section of Chronicle of Higher Education:

A small sement of the faculty at Case Western reserve University has voted no confidence in the president and provost of the Cleveland-based university, which is seeking to eliminate a $40-million budget deficit. Edward R. Hundert, a psychiatrist and medical ethicist who was hired as president in Augsut 2002, has been under fire for perceived fund-raising failures and for overseeing faulty budget projections.

Just thought you should know this as you make your decision.

What exactly does that mean for a student?

Hey yougotjohn, was your sister recruited on campus, what exactly does she do?

I don't think a 22 to 30 ranking is that big of a deal. I say this even knowing that I am most likely going to smith this year unless I get some serious financial aid from Wisconsin or Smeal at penn State. The perception of Case at my high school is that it is the ultimate saftey in that it is really quite easy to get into and it is a good school. I have felt the ranking that us news gave is just a bit high but it is still a great school. Many of the middle high level business program schools are big just look at IU UIUC Minnesota UW-Madison, Ohio state, PSU, University arizona, UMCP, amoung others. Case is a good school and it seems to fit your wants of a small town. The only real draw back is that it might be the best place socially. That is probably the most consistant thing I hear when we are talking about negitives.

What exactly does that mean for a student? You need to figure that out yourself. However, if I were the student, I would definitely think twice about going to CWRU and think that UMCP is a great deal!

The thing is, I didn't apply to Smith @ UMCP I applied to economics in the schoolar of behavioral and social sciences. I was told that it was fairly easy to switch right away, I still need to make sure of that. Also I didnt get into any honors programs @ UMCP and its also a HUGE school. People say its near DC but it's not like you can go there every night its still a 30-60m drive depending on traffic. Case is in the middle of the city and I know that their co-op program really helps when you want to get a job.

Also as I mentioned earlier cost isn't really an issue, Case and UMCP are the cheapest colleges on my list, I just wanna go to the place that will prepare me best for the job market. I hope to get a job right out of college possibly management consulting or Finance headed in an MBA direction...

And will those administrative problems collegeparent mentioned really be an issue for students? What could be the possible drawbacks?

Hoping to keep this thread on the front page because I have to decide between the two before May 1st...

no it isn't, i don't think. Read through the maryland page on this site. there are numerous threads threads about this. At maryland Smith is a LEP(limited enrollment program). It is said to be the hardest school to get into. I believe the average of UMCP is a 1260 and the average of the smith school is a 1360. You cannot apply to smith until you are a junior. You can't switch over right away from my understanding. I don't want to lead you in the wrong direction and that is why i sometimes don't give advice i am not sure of but i am pretty sure about this. I'll find the thread on the maryland board. Call the school, talk to a counceler.

well here it is... It was a thread made by you lol.

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=151229%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=151229</a></p>

just for more information--<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=153711">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=153711</a>
There we talk about being in economics or being in a specific program through the letters and sciences school.

here is the page at smith.
<a href="http://www.smith.umd.edu/undergrad/admissionrequirements.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.smith.umd.edu/undergrad/admissionrequirements.html</a></p>

Please someone else go over this but i don't think i am reading it wrong.

I hope this helps. It isn't that big of a deal. Just transfer your junior year but I don't think you can do it before then. that is my understanding, i might be wrong but i provided everything i know about it so you can interpretation of it...

Some student from UMD called me the other day and I asked if it was easy to switch from SOAS to engineering and she said "Oh yea its really easy!"

Again don't take my word for it. Infact don't even take that kids word for it. Call up the school or get in touch with a councelor. You asked the kid about switching to engineering? That might have different requirements. Its not that Smith is hard to tranfers but from my understanding it is just that you can't do it till junior year
