In 10th grade, I received a "D" letter grade during the first semester of AP World History. I tried to retake the ap class in community college but my counselor says I cannot for some obscure reason. I am applying to all the UC's and I was wondering where I stand with this bad grade as I apply? With this "D", I still have a 3.96 UC GPA (If i somehow retake it... 4.0). If anyone knows what I should do or has a similar story and got accepted at a selective UC (UCSD, UCLA, UCB) please give some advice. Thank you.

What was your final grade for the course?

@skieurope Second semester, I got a C. First semester a D.

@IBGuy101: You need to find a way to retake that 1st Semester at least to replace the D. Also, having a C on your transcript will definitely not help if you are interested in UCLA/UCSD/UCB. I do know of 2 students that got into UCSB and UCI with 1 C on their transcript but it was for an elective class and not a major core class. Any way you can retake on-line? Did you pass the AP World History exam?? Maybe that will suffice. I would contact the UC application center and maybe they can help. http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/contact/index.html

@Gumbymom to be honest with you, I had serious family issues that plagued my academic grade (my first AP class) so I did poorly on the AP exam (2). The problem on why I most likely cannot retake it, according to my counselor, is that there is little room for high school students for community college in my area, (which by the way is the only way to retake the class). Thank you for your support.

Does your HS offer regular World History and can you take that class instead or some class that is equivalent? since 1 of the a-g requirements is a social science in World History.

@gumbymom Yes they do, and it is online… I am not really worried for my a-g but instead my gpa (which in my opinion is not good enough for a competivive major.) should I just do that if my counselor cannot find a community college with ap world history equivalent course?

See if you can take the class online to make up for it. If not, then go to your counselor and demonstrate a great deal of interest in retaking the course, emphasizing the fact that you are desperate to not look bad on your application.

And if that doesn’t work, then try to emphasize your extracurriculars on your app.
