So I had my TAGs for UCSC and UCD accepted earlier in the semester with a 3.3 transfer GPA as a psychology major. This fall I had taken chem 101 and precalculus 1, the latter being a major prereq for math. I did good in chem but my math professor is known for being pretty difficult so I was getting a C.Went to class the day of the math final feeling prepared but pretty much got torn to pieces. The hardest test I have ever taken in my life. I get the material, but the professor made each question on that test a brain smasher. Despite giving us 3 hours for the final, only about 1/3 of the class even managed to finish it.

Got my grade today, and it is a D. My TAG will be null and void, no question. Problem is that I can't retake it next semester as all of the classes are full. I have registered for statistics, which would fulfill my IGETC math requirement. Since precalculus is a major prereq, I am worried (although this is my only missing one). Can I still get into UCSC, my first choice?

My stats in short:
Major prereqs: one missing (precalculus, the one I got a D in)
Transfer GPA: 3.2ish now :[
IGETC: only missing math, enrolled in stats for Spring

First off, sit back and relax! I personally think you’re OK for UCSC. I know exactly how you feel! I am in a very similar situation (not exactly, but somewhat) in that I ended up getting a “C” in a major pre-req DIRECTLY related to my major, in the worst possible semester for this to happen!!

I looked up the numbers for your major at UCSC (your 1st choice) and if you say you’ll have a 3.2ish, you should be OK. Here’s what I found for 2009 fall:

Secondly, I don’t think your TAG is automatically null and void. AS LONG AS YOU CAN SUBSTITUTE THAT PRECALC COURSE with another one for IGETC purposes that’s all they care about - and you’re doing that with the stats course. All they care about is that your OVERALL gpa is above 3.0 (However, confirm this with a counselor at your CC).

Yes, missing a pre-req in this competitive environment will put you at some disadvantage, but then again if your TAG is still valid this will be a moot issue.

Another thing to remember, is that the stats include lots of ineligible applicants (UC-wise), so your chances are probably a lot better than you think (even considering the statistics above).

victor5555,
thank you for your reply.
You definitely put me at ease.
I called and emailed the UCSC regional rep and asked her about my situation,
hopefully she gets back to me soon.

I was so stressed because I’ve been at my CC for 4 years due to major changes and bad advice from counselors. Now that I’m so close to transferring, I can’t have it taken away due to one freakin’ class.
But yes, thank you for your reply. I can almost feel my blood pressure dropping a few points lol :]

The tough part with UCSC is when you want to get into a CS or engineering major, the departments are really picky about the prereqs! One of my friends had every last computer engineering prereq (there’s what… 13?) and they denied him because he was missing one… they reinstated his TAG only when he promised to take that last prereq. Myself? My TAG was denied faster than I could imagine and they didn’t even answer my *** email lol.

UCSC’s Baskin school seems to think they’re MIT quality or something.

@victor5555 what options do you select on stat finder to see a break of admits for each GPA bracket?

To the OP, I believe you still have a chance at UCSC regardless of the voided TAG due to the D in a pre-req course. You have IGETC completed and it is great that you registered for a stats class to fulfill everything. While I can’t predict what will happen, I say you can get in and just re-take pre-calc at UCSC.

@wwlink, wow I am surprised.
One prereq is usually not a big deal for many UC campuses. @pyoro1, thank you for your response, it helps! You know, I have been told by terrible counselors “one more year until transfer” for the past THREE YEARS. If I hear that one more time from another one, I’m gonna crack!
I hope I get my admissions decision soon after March 15th so I can know whether or not to submit my application for graduation.
Sigh…
