Got a D in Math

For the fall, I received a D on a non-transferable math course. The significance of this is that I needed to pass this non-transferable math course in order to take Statistics for the math requirement of the IGETC. My TAG was approved by UC Davis a couple months back and it specified that I must complete the IGETC by the end of spring. Since I will not be able to take Stats for the spring, does that mean my TAG is nullified? Does it also mean my application is void as well?

I'm a History major and currently have 50 semester units and I will have over 60 units by the end of spring. My GPA is a solid 3.0.

Did you try taking that non-transferable math in winter? If you can’t complete your math requirement for IGETC by spring, you will be rejected even without TAG…

@PoopNukem: Yes, your TAG will be rejected if you can’t finish stats by spring. I would look at getting into a fast track course that lets your retake the pre-req for stats, then take stats (or something comparable) in the 2nd fast track session of the spring semester. Look around at other CCs as well if you’re serious about getting this done.

Unfortunately, my school does not hold classes for the winter. By the end of spring, my only requirement left will be math. Will they accept a partial IGETC certification? If not and I take Stats during the summer, will that mean I have a year of just sitting around when I reapply for next fall?

@Grimes: the fast track thing sounds good. I will look around for schools in my area that have it.

Ask the campus you’re interested in if you can take a IGETC course in summer. I know that some campuses accept that (I believe UCI does, but correct me if I’m wrong!)

I would try my hardest to petition to go straight into Stats. Explain your situation about your IGETC and say you’re very motivated and etc. Believe me, it’s so much different than say Algebra 2. I suck in Algebra but got an A in stats. They might somehow let you do it. It worked for me (although I did take a very short non credit algebra 2 session, which honestly did not raise my placement score at all.) It doesn’t look good that you just got a D in your class but it’s worth a shot. Good luck!

Thank you all for the responses.

Indie, how does a petition for math work and where would I start?

@PoopNukem:

I had to petition the math department as well for a similar issue. They’re most likely going to have you retest and if you don’t place high enough, you’ll meet with the president of the math department (or someone similar) and explain the situation. When I did this, he put me on the course plan that allowed me to fast track my way through it in one semester.

If all else fails, will any of the UCs accept partial IGETC certification instead of full?

Check with the Math Department and see if you can take Statistics in the Spring with the course you got the D in as a co-requisite rather than a pre-requisite. It would allow you to replace the D with a higher grade and I think it is more likely that they would agree to you taking the Statistics course if you were also taking the class you got a D in as a co-requisite rather than simply waiving it.

lol all these D threads!

Suck it up, study for 6 weeks and pass the placement exam so can take stats during summer.
