Dance Portion of Auditions

I just finished filling out my application for CCPA, and scheduled my audition in Feb.

I just have a quick question! In musical theatre, I would definately say my strengths are in voice and acting. I was just wondering what the dance audition is like, and if I will be able to survive it with only a small amount of training in Ballet, Jazz, and Modern?

Thanks so much for your help!

Last year, the dance call was mainly musical theatre jazz. It was not terribly complicated. Luis Perez, the head of the MT program, teaches the dance and really focuses on telling you to sell it, even if you can’t do all of the steps. I think you’ll be okay with your amount of dance training. Plus, I will be honest and say that dance not the aspect of the program that gets the most focus. While it is good to do well at the dance call, it is your singing and acting portions of the audition that REALLY count!

PS- I’m a freshman MT at Roosevelt. If you have any questions about the process or the school or anything, please let me know!!

Thank you so much!!
That reassurance helps a lot!!
And advice you could give me that would help with auditions would be spectacular!! I absolutely love CCPA…it’s my number one choice!

And do you like the program and such?? What is the main emphasis??

I’ve heard with some schools that they’re more focused on the fact if your capable of taking direction and if you’re willing to learn and absorb information–is this true for Roosevelt too??

Once again, thanks!

Yes, I absolutely LOVE the program at CCPA. No program is perfect, but for my needs, this one is pretty darn close. I would have to say the main emphasis is acting. We have acting studio two times a week where we are mixed in with the acting majors. We also have an acting lab, which is just for MT’s but focused on acting the song. Music is also a big portion of the program. All freshmen, unless they test out, take music theory for 2 semesters and piano skills. We also all take an ensemble singing/vocal technique class first semester. We do not take private voice until second semester because they want everyone to start on the same page with the same basic knowledge. Some people pay extra to take voice lessons first semester, but I don’t see it as being a huge problem since we are still singing in several of our classes.

As far as the audition goes, the best thing I can tell you is to BE YOURSELF. They don’t want you to be perfect. They don’t want you to be a robot. They do, however, want you to be knowledgeable and prepared. Be yourself. Answer the questions they ask you honestly. Show that you WANT to be there. The auditor will want to see that you are a REAL person with real goals, not someone who just wants to be a star. They of course are interested in if you can take direction and absorb information as well.

Again, if you have any questions feel free to contact me. Good luck with the process!

The questions I’m about to ask are probably silly, but I just want to be as prepared as I can be!

What is “appropriate attire” for the dance portion of the audition? I definately don’t call myself a dancer, so I’m not sure what’s appropriate. Jazz pants and jazz shoes??

Also, what is appropriate dress for the singing/monologue portion of the audtion? I’ve heard rumors that I’m not sure are true or not: Should character shoes be worn during this part of the audition??

Also, can you tell me the format of auditions??

I’m really excited to embark on this adventure!! I hope good outcomes come along with it as well! Thank you so much for your help!!
