Davis UHP / ISHP Program

I’m in the middle of dilemma right now, deciding between UC Berkeley and UC Davis with Regents Scholarship and an ISHP/UHP Program (Honors Program). I am possibly planning to go on to graduate school (medical school?) at the current moment, but I applied undeclared to both schools.

Today I went to Cal Day and I really enjoyed it, I definitely liked the campus and could see myself at Berkeley. However, I have yet to visit Davis and I’ll probably do that in the coming week or so. However, since I missed out on all the information on Picnic Day (and also I probably can’t go to the Friday Admit Day) I was wondering if anyone here is part of the UHP Program at Davis or is familiar with it and could let me know what it’s like. Would it be worthwhile to go to Davis over Berkeley to do this program?

Thanks!

I’m a senior in high school, and I’m in a similar situation as you. Here are just some of my thoughts, hopefully they’ll help you.

If you feel pretty sure you want to do pre-med or any other pre-health, I’ve heard people advise against doing it at Berkeley. (Try reading this if you haven’t already: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/911500-warning-all-student-considering-premed-berkeley-please-read-first.html?highlight=med</a>) It does have a reputation for being cutthroat, and while I’m sure not everyone will necessarily be out to get you, the people at UCB will be substantially more competitive than at UCD. Like my friend at Cal told me though, if you can get into Berkeley, you can get out of it. Just realize though, it’s not enough to be good at Cal, you need to be the best, especially if you’re considering pre-med. Berkeley IS a great school though, and if you’re sinking, there’re plenty of places you can turn to for help–you just need to be willing to find them. Berkeley also carries a lot of weight with its name. (My friend also told me that having Berkeley’s name to back her up helps her a LOT when she’s trying to collect resources for research projects, etc.) At the same time though, it’s really your last degree that matters; plus it’s not as if UCD is a bad school either–it just unfortunately has a little less prestige. Also, Regents sounds like it’s a great opportunity. I think the priority registration will really help you your first two years when you’re trying to get your GE done that everyone else needs, and the other perks sound great too.

HOWEVER, if you can really see yourself at Cal and you love it, then for sure, you should go there. When it comes to important decisions, it’s always your heart that wins in the end over your brain. If you really want to go to Cal, go for it, but don’t disregard all the other things that come with being a Cal student either. Just be willing to work really hard, and I’m sure you’ll be fine. =)

Well, that’s the end of my rambling… I think I was talking more to myself, but hopefully that helped you too. =)

it’s up to you.

i am a regents scholar at UCD + i participated in ISHP. honestly, the best part of ISHP is the community and the classes! you really get to know everyone in your building (Miller) because you guys are taking classes with each other. :)

plus, you get to take classes that are really small (30 people or less), so you actually get to know your professors without going to office hours, etc. i still say hi and chat with my professors from my first year ISHP classes. oh, and the profs are pretty legit. haha.

yeah. it’s really up to you. honestly, being premed at davis is hard work, just like being premed at berkeley is hard work. HOWEVER, davis has the added benefit of student run clinics (there are seven on campus) AND numerous hospital internships you can sign up for. also, even though you are competing against your classmates on a curve, no one will try to sabotage you.

obviously, i’m pushing davis here. haha. i have some bias. but it’s really up to you. you’ve got the right idea – you’re checking out the schools. go with whichever one you feel suits you the best, because ultimately, you’re the one who’s going to be spending four years there. :)

Couple of questions —
(1) Do we have to go Sacramento for hospital internships?
(2) Where can I get the medical stats for undergraduates ? I am looking for how many students apply to med schools and how many gets selected …

Appreciate any input …

Really good thread about EC opportunities. Anyone has more info? How hard is Honors to get into and have good GPA (relative to Cal)
