De Anza CC'ers

@LiveTheLimit:

I actually applied to most schools as a Philosophy major. However, I applied to a different program for Berkeley.

I recall that De Anza had tricky articulation agreements with the Philosophy department for their lower division courses. I, too, went outside to try to fullfil those courses. The primary factor Berkeley and other schools are looking at from lower-division prep work is the ability to determine your “strength of academic preparation” for the major. So, if you’ve completed and done well in 2 pre-req courses you’ll be just fine. If you’re still uneasy, I’d recommend taking one or two extra philosophy courses at De Anza – even if they don’t count towards the requirement – to demonstrate that you’re intellectually prepared to be a Philosophy major at Berkeley.

So to answer your question: No, you’ll be fine so long as you complete IGETC, have a strong GPA, and do well in the Philosophy courses you do take.

Sidenote: I highly recommend any class by Cynthia Kauffman. Woman and Philosophy along with Critical Consciousness and Social Change are both fanstastic courses. Professor Biamonte is also an engaging lecturer in the department at De Anza.

Hey, also I’ve heard of many letdowns, such as “phil degree will not get you any where.” My aim is law school, but I’m fully aware that I need job experiences and stuff. Do you know what I can do w/ my bachelors of phil? I’m assuming I need some sort of job before I apply to law school. And thanks for letting me know. Thank you!

It’s true that a BA in Philosophy doesn’t get you all that much these days. Philosophy majors are one of the most represented majors in law school. You can absolutely apply straight to law school after undergrad, it’s very common and many people get accepted. Law school is primarily about your GPA and LSAT score. I’d recommend getting to law school as fast as you can.

If you do want a break in between, it’s not uncommon for philosophy majors to work at the assistant level in politics and legal fields. You can become a paralegal/legal assistant for a firm if you want to get some legal exposure. If you’re interested in politics you can head to the Washington (or local and state government) and intern in a Congressional office. That’s a great way to get a Staff Assistant (starting job in politics). Or, if you’re interested in teaching you can consider Teach for America. Peace Corps is also a popular choice with Berkeley students. Nonprofit work is big as well.

For a lot of these social science degrees it’s helpful to figure out where you’d like to work, intern, make connections, and score a job.

Have a plan, be ambitious, take some risks, have moxy, and you’ll do just fine.

CCCAlum, please do more research. I’m surprised to hear you say such things even though you supposedly applied as a philosophy major to other campuses. The department at De Anza is well aware of possible opportunities for philosophy majors and you should already be aware of them rather than spreading false knowledge that there is not much you can do with the major. There are several fields one can go into with a philosophy background. Despite popular belief on these forums, the more “liberal arts” leaning your degree, the more versatile a person can be seen as a job candidate. The more technical degrees can be more limiting. Notice I say “can be” and nothing more definite than that. It is all in how creative you are at finding a job that interests you with the degree you have.

I found a sampling on UNCA’s website that offers suggestions of possible occupations among other things. Remember these are just a sampling and by no means a complete list (and it is a couple years old, unfortunately, but it is still relevant).

http://www2.unca.edu/career/majorsheets/philosophy.pdf

LiveTheLimit: If you really want to know the answer to your question about the prereqs, call UCB and ask.

In theory, they are not supposed to hold anything against you that you could not take at your campus. But that is in no way an official answer and I am having difficulty finding the information on UCB’s transfer page to support that statement. Perhaps someone else has the link. A good rule of thumb on CC is that unless someone can provide you with a verifiable source or is listed as an official UCB representative on CC, then you should take anything they say with a grain of salt ;)

I’ll grant that this is controversial, but I don’t believe I’m guilty of “false knowledge.” This is a discussion board so everyone can benefit from divergent viewpoints. I welcome yours.

For starters, you take that list out of context. That list specifically asks the reader to “Note that occupations that require an advanced degree are also listed.” Meaning, when they list that Philosophy graduates have gotten jobs as lawyers it’s not as a result of their BA in Philosophy it’s because they went to law school. The point being: A Bachelors in Philosophy by itself isn’t going to get you all that far. Just like most careers in the social sciences today, you’re best served by going to graduate school.

Also, remember that I said that with a sole BA in Philosophy you can enter fields like politics, education, nonprofits, and the paralegal field. That’s not exactly a world of no opportunity, now is it?

Anyways, LiveTheLimit – it’s your decision, that’s my take on it.

Just want to chime in.

If you can, and distance is not an issue, definitely go to De Anza. This is a great community college with great professors. You will definitely be well prepared if you transfer from De Anza to a UC.

Thank you guys! I actually got a lot of of you two. And also, I don’t think you were wrong when you said that either. Many have told me that too.

Therealist, you are so right on that! I’m going to De anza. Funny thing is most of my friends at EVC have no clue what TAG is. DE Anza provides you a lot of information. One of the best CC’s in the US.

Slightly different topic, but still having to do with De Anza. This will be my third and last year here and I’m beginning to develop a slight anxiety about the difficulty of courses at UCSD compared to those at De Anza, particularly the biology and chemistry courses as I will be hopefully admitted as a biochem/bio major.

Can anyone chime in on what to expect difficulty wise or how they differ? Comparatively of course.

@SDhopeful
De Anza is a great school but overall many professors are way too easy on the students where a lot of grades are not a good representation. Many of De Anza’s GE classes are a joke and do not prepare most students for UC level classes. BUT…
De Anza does have one of the best Chem and Bio offerings in Nor-cal which UCSD recognizes as such. You should be prepared enough for Bio/Chem and expect a similar load.

@investment do you know when UCB offer TAP ?
Thanks

Usually in the summer right after high school. If you had good grades, they contact you.

Soph at De Anza as well here. One more effing year T__T

Wheeeeeeeeeeeee~
How was everyone’s first two weeks of fall quarter :D?
Kind of sucks that there’s not much to do during breaks :confused:
Does anyone know if the restaurants across the street are any good? I’m kind of sick of togos and I get quicklies errday and its getting kind of tiring (and the cafeteria food kind of sucks >.>).

go to jjs!!! sooo good v_v
the parking sitch has been MAD CRAZY like worst ive seen yet…try doing ur hw between breaks…its what i do!
how was ur first two weeks woo?

There’s Chipotle and Rio Adobe nearby as well if Mexican food is your thing.
It feels like this quarter has been going by so slowly…

lol…maybe cuz youre anxious about cal? and its been going pretty quickly for me, surprisingly. what classes are you taking?

I’ll agree that I am extremely anxious about getting admitted to Cal. I’m taking math 1B, math 10, poli 5, and business 10 this quarter. You?

stats?! who are you taking it with? cuz im taking it tooo :] whats your major? and besides stats im taking hist 17b, hist 4b, and ics 20. really good teachers/classes so time flies

Lol you shut down the official 2011 chance thread right after I posted mine but anyways I’m political science major.
I’m taking Stats with Kejian Shi. It’s been pretty easy so far. I’m also taking 1B with him and that hasn’t exactly been a cake walk.
And I just found out that Cal doesn’t take AP scores as fulfilling pre-major reqs for poli sci so now I’m missing a pre req so I gotta take a history class next quarter. /sadface

@redoplease
The first two weeks have been pretty uneventful XD
My classes are pretty fun though: I’m taking music 3A, Mand1 (would’ve been math 52 BUT IT WAS FRIGGEN CANCELLED DAAHHHH RAGE), Japanese 4, and English 1B.
Tuesdays and Thursdays suck because I’m at school from early in the morning to 6:15PM, so I get home and pretty much pass out -.-

Hows stats? I’m kind of tempted to take that as my transferable math instead of going through the precalc series just to take Calc 1A :confused: Tbh I’d rather take it at foothill so I can just take 49A then go straight into calc >.>
