when the colleges have a deadline eg. jan 1, does it mean the application materials has to get to the office by jan 1? what if there's some sort of screw up in the post and it arrives a little late?

and for toefl - does it usually have a different deadline from the admission/SAT report deadline? is it okay to send it a little later?
i know i'm asking a no-brainer, but currently the test centers in my country from august through to oct are FULL, so there's no way i can take it anytime soon :|

oh and is it true that we're exempted from toefl if we get above a certain SAT cr score?

I'm not sure but I'd say that deadlines are, normally, referring to the date of the postmark. For most schools you can send in your apps online anyway.

TOEFL scores are infamous for being late. Many colleges recommend to take the TOEFL well in advance to make sure that they receive the official score report in time. Take it as early as possible!

This is true for certain colleges. Brown, for instance, waives the TOEFL requirement for you if you have >600 on your CR which you should have anyway if you wanna have a shot at Brown ;). However, there are also colleges who seem to insist that all internationals take the TOEFL.
A friend of mine scored 760 on her CR and was an exchange student in America for one year... she still had to take the TOEFL.

Deadlines are for postmarks meaning you have until that day to send in the application. It doesn't need to be received by the deadline, just sent out.

You can go ahead and fax/email your TOELF score beforehand if you think the official reports will arrive too late. Adcoms usually give you the benefit of doubt and believe your self-reported scores. Don't lie though as they will get those reports eventually.

Check each school for their TOELF requirement. It's better to be safe than sorry. You can visit the international pages or email them directly and ask.
