Deans' Honor Scholarship

does anyone know when we will hear back? also how many people do u think applied?

They are released late February via mail (it’s a big big envelope) and in the past they have selected 75 out of 1000 so 7.5% selection rate. As it appears many people have applied, it may be a bit more than 1000.

even if you didn’t get the scholarship you still receive a letter?

@SomethingScience

That I’m not sure. Someone else correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe acceptance is a big envelope (mine was delivered overnight via UPS) and rejection is a regular letter, not special delivery.

okay thank you!! around what date in february did you receive it? like the 20s?

Last year the Deans’ Honor Scholarship package arrived for my daughter on February 20th. I think we did something sneaky like look for an incoming package from DHL or Fedex and knew something was on the way from “New Orleans” … and there may have been an email ahead the day before the actual package arrived.

In the past, those not receiving the DHS were notified by regular sized simple letter in US Mail. Those accepted receive a FedEx delivery that contains the DHS hard leather bound portfolio and acceptance letter.

You can go to FedEx and create a free account in your child’s name and home address, and indicate you want to receive email notifications of any inbound FedEx packages. We did this for our son, a DHS recipient and current student at Tulane. I received an email notification that a FedEx label had been created from Tulane/NOLA (or similar) to our home, and so we knew he would be get it - but waited for the actual package to be certain.

Good luck.

wow thank you so much!!!

FYI I think its UPS not FedEx. My daughter received DHS last year and it was through UPS. Make sure you set it up in student’s name exactly how the name appears on application. Last year the notice that something was mailed came about five days before we received the actual package. If you see something coming from the school it’s a good sign.

For parents on here whose children received DHS, would it be okay if you guys shared your kids’ stats? I don’t want to pry or make anyone uncomfortable, but I’d like to gauge my chances for DHS since Tulane is my absolute perfect fit and this is kind of my only shot at being able to afford going there! Thanks in advance

D got a notification that she didn’t get the DHS but due to the strength of her app they upped her merit from 25k to $35k! Nice consolation! Letter said there was over 3000 applicants.

I didn’t get the DHS either, but my merit scholarship also got increased, from $26k to $34k!! Very happy about that at least! And just to clarify, the letter said there were over 1,200 applicants.

Right sorry for the confusion. She actually got two letters - one saying she didn’t get the DHS, one for not getting PTA.
There were 3000 applicants for PTA, 1200 for DHS.

wait what!!! your scholarships were increased?? I also did not receive it but my scholarship remained the same :frowning: did it say in your letter that they increased your scholarship? what do you think I should do to try and increase my scholarship?

@jwbbb7 and @FrothyShake Are you both certain that the increase you received was “merit aid” instead of “need-based”? I think there is some confusion here about the increase–the maximum merit awarded to any applicant was $32,000. Any increase from $25,000 to $35,000 or from $26,000 to $34,000 must be based on need, not merit. It could be that based on your student’s high quality submittal they want to increase the need-based aid in order to create greater incentive to attend.

@trackmbe3, @sss111222 - Yep merit - “Due to the strength of your Deans’ Honor Scholarship application, we would like to increase your merit scholarship to a total of $35,000, awarded annually. We received over 1,200 applications for the Deans’ Honor Scholarship, and though you have not been selected to receive the award, we are delighted to offer this increase in scholarship to a select group of finalists.”

@FrothyShake and @jwbbb7 Congrats! Seems like Tulane is creatively using merit aid again. Instead of raising the amounts of the various levels of merit aid, including the maximum merit aid award of $32,000 at time of acceptance (based on stats), Tulane is raising it indirectly by offering additional merit aid to finalists for the DHS and Paul Tulane awards. (I think in past few years they were only offering $1,000 to all applicants who submitted either project). This seems like good business sense, because in each of the past several 2 or 3 years the merit aid awards have stayed the same while the tuition has increased by almost 5% yearly, thus eroding the value of the amount of the award in relation to the increased cost of attendance, and making the merit aid less of an inducer to attend. And it is rewarding the applicants who showed this additional demonstrated interest by taking the time and the effort to submit these two projects.

I agree makes sense to tailor the merit awards - My daughter was accepted, she committed and is pleased with her merit but was a little lower than we expected given her stats. She thought she had submitted the Tulane package - still her essays she worked pretty hard on but now that we look at her portal there is no sign they were “accepted”. We are pretty sure she missed something in the submission - so our fault which is a shame because she managed the college application process with incredible attention to detail - except this scholarship submission. We thought we might send a note letting them know what happened and they might be able to see an online indication she started the process. No doubt she will not be in the pool for the PTS but maybe they would reconsider her merit. We have been really impressed by all the correspondence and communication but this was a miss on our end.

@trackmbe3 yep mine was definitely merit too!
