Deans List?

@fallenchemist maybe you know the answer to this- Does Tulane still have a Deans list? I can’t find any current information and haven’t seen anything published.

Well, my D was on it every semester as best I can remember, so as of 1year ago they still had it. I am typing this on the fly, so to speak. Let me check into it more when I am home tonight.

OK, I was able to find it in a spare moment, but I couldn’t get this silly iPad to copy/paste. In short, first and second year students need a 3.5+, while others need a 3.667+. All need to have been enrolled in at least 14 hours. I cannot remember how long after the end of the semester it took to get the letter, but it might have been about a month. Also, I think they sent the one after the fall semester directly to the student at Tulane, while the other was sent to the home. As best I can recall.

My son definitely qualified for the Dean’s list but we haven’t received any notification, that’s why I was curious.

Probably either A ) just hasn’t arrived yet; or B ) he has received it at school and neglected to tell you. But I assume you asked, so probably A. I would say if he doesn’t get something by the end of the month, he should check with the Dean of Students office.

Here is the link to the catalog page that has the info. http://catalog.tulane.edu/content.php?catoid=41&navoid=1623#Dean_s_List_Policies

Apparently the 2013-2014 version of the undergraduate catalog is still the ruling document. I found a 2014-2015 Graduate catalog, but not an undergraduate one.

My son also qualified and we have not received anything. thanks @fallenchemist I have told him to check the dorm mail box. I too have searched the web site, can’t find anything.

Congrats on DL.

That link is working for you though, right?

@fallenchemist yes the link works! don’t worry  I am so proud of him just antsy to get the letter!

Yes, it is a very nice letter to get. Maybe they ought to do some small thing for those that make the list, like a $10 credit at PJ’s Coffee or whatever. I know it would be too expensive to do more, but some small gesture might be nice. Or am I off base here? Maybe we shouldn’t completely forget the idea of accomplishment for its own sake? What do you all think? Just a fun question to kick around.

I’d be happy with a letter and maybe a notice in the local paper! Bragging rights, lol. Seeing all the local kids who go to far less impressive schools making the Deans List I just want my turn to brag!

Bragging is one of the few perks we have left!! God knows I do it enough on here.

I believe S2’s Dean’s List letters are still clipped to the refrigerator door though he graduated last May.

Do the students only get a letter or do the parents also get something?

Just the students, I think. I believe it falls under the privacy act wherein unless the students expressly give permission, the school is not allowed to share grades with anyone outside of the school. And even though it is good news, I guess a letter saying they are on the Dean’s List would be a form of grade sharing, even if not specific. I guess that is why there is no online posting of the list either. I don’t know if things were really better before all these regulations, but they sure were simpler.

Even with the requirements listed about it doesn’t appear all are getting the “letter” so not sure what else if required this year for freshmen.

Still no letter here. And we just found out about Phi Sigma Pi- the national honor fraternity (open to males and females). . And it appears it’s too late to join now for this semester. I would have thought there would have been some kind of communication about it.

This is all very surprising. My D got her Dean’s list letters pretty promptly, and I definitely remember her getting an invitation to PSP. I would strongly encourage a student to ask about both, but especially the Dean’s list issue. Perhaps there is someone in the Dean of Students office (or maybe the registrar? But I would think the DoS) that is supposed to be responsible for all communications regarding academic honors and something has gone awry. I really don’t know.

It wouldn’t be inappropriate for a parent to inquire, but I always like to see the students assert themselves first when possible. It’s a good life lesson that there is nothing wrong with chasing after something that you earned. I know some students (people in general as well I am sure) think there is something “icky” about inquiries regarding issues that are only about bringing attention to themselves, but I don’t see it that way at all. Like I said, they worked hard to earn it. They don’t get paid to be students (at least not with actual spending money) so this is really the “bonuses” due for a great semester performance, if you want to look at it as an analogy to a regular job.

I’m with you on that one, it’s his job to inquire about it. We’ll be seeing him next week so I can give a little push.

My daughter also told me she hasn’t gotten anything…of course, she also said that she doesn’t check her mailbox all that often either, as I am about the only person who sends her snail mail! I will gently suggest that she follow up.

I will see my son Sunday and ask again if he got a letter. He doesn’t seem to be worried about it and probably could careless but I agree he earned it so he should be recognized.

There is a list on Tulane’s website for School of Continuing Studies Fall 2014 Dean’s list so I am not sure if this has everyone or if each college has their own list.
