DECEMBER 2008 SAT Subject Test: World History

yes i put the same thing

what was the begging thing? i cant remember?

compared the practice tests (Blue Book from CB , PR), this test was alot harder...

It was about the polis (maybe I m confusing it with practice tests)

begging and polis??^^ LOL

Polis= greek city-state and surroundings

i guess it was a question but I cant remember correctly?

I read something " what was that beginning thing" :)

FWIW, I put "could support larger populations" for agricultural society as well.

750 FTW!

anything else ????

Wait, how did you know that it was agricultural societies, not that 'new type of food diet or w/e increased population'?

I can't believe the scores I'm seeing here. I had no clue! This was my D's first SAT II. She took it along with English (Lit?). She said the english was easy but she thought she was finished with the WH...then too late noticed she'd missed several questions at the end and only had a minute or so and filled them in randomly. So she cancelled. And she had to of course cancel the whole day...so she'll now also have to take the English again!! I can't believe these scores y'all are listing are in the 700 range. Where does this data come from (so she can feel better/know more before taking the rest of her SAT IIs). THANKS! and good luck to you all.

The scale used is from the 05/06 world history tests (from the big SAT practice book). It varies each year +/- 3 points. Since the world history test is known as one of the hardest SAT IIs, the scale has generally been lenient at around -17=800. After that point it drops off rapidly and it's back to a normal scale. Random bubbling at the end could very easily drop you down, given the penalty for guessing and a few wrong answers here and there - out of 95 questions it does add up quickly.

Your D can probably use the extra time to get even higher scores if that is what she is aiming for. The WH test, with solid preparation, is a manageable 800.

Thanks JCdenton. I think she said it wasn't very many questions. She figured one right and 4 wrong would be "equal" (one point less four quarter points) so she risked it. Oh well...live and learn. She'll be a lot more prepared next time. Wish I'd found this forum for her before now!

^ I heard 12 to 14 wrong would still be a 800 in many cases. Each one wrong from that, take away 10 to 20 points... I'm sure she has time to give it another shot (possibly do even better!)

Thanks Gryffon. Yep, hoping for better. She's just a Jr., but has NONE of the Winter or Spring SAT dates available either this year or next (in FAR too many extra curricular activities that have big contests each Saturday all winter). So she wanted to start NOW. Her (Fall Jr year) SAT was 740, 740, 730...so we are CONSIDERING some elite schools and wanted to see what she could do in terms of subject tests, knowing they're much more specific/less broad than the SAT. And she selected WH because she took A/P WH as a freshman so wanted to get that one done sooner rather than later since it's already been 2 years...AND she's deciding between majoring in music versus social sciences/humanities. So she wanted to take both history tests.

Not many kids in the Midwest take the subject tests so we didn't have much information about them. She's at a great High School but the counselors don't prepare the kids very well in advance. It's a huge school, kids get lost. So we didn't even KNOW about the SAT subject tests until we went on a few east coast school tours! If we'd waited until time to apply, it would have been too late to do them since...as I said...she has NO Winter/Spring dates.

Anyway - yes...it was a learning experience that will help her decide what she wants to take in June. THANKS all.

which books did you guys use to prepare for U.S. history, and which ones do you recommend now that you have taken the actual test? I'm thinking of taking it soon, before the end of my sophomore year, but I am not sure as to whether it would take too much studying.

I used Barrons. It took just two weeks to finish it all but it was worthy to my opinion.

started cramming 10 before the test, finished 3 days before and then did 6 practice tests!

barrons is the best, but i also recommend the blue book form collegeboard!

Well I guess that scores are going to come out tomorrow..
A sincere Gooood luck to everyone .....Ricciola

GL to you as well!
Let's hope for CC 800s all around :)

800:) yeah!!!!!!

800!!! Gotta love that curve!

waaaw 800 :)

Merry Christmas to all of you guys
