Decisions being released today...

I think that Mr. Farmer's blog post may probably be a true indicator of when things will be released. In the past they were able to get things done early because the number of early applications had stayed fairly consistent with past years. This year however they announced early on that they were receiving a record number of early applications which I am sure really put the process for them behind what has happened in past years. There's a lot of work required to send out the notifications once decisions are reached and the last thing they want to do is send out erroneous information which has happened in the past at UNC and other places.

You have to believe that they want the decisions sent out just as much as you want to receive them and that they are not intentionally delaying any announcements. I know this is hard to accept but you need to be patient and accept the 15th as the date and be pleasantly surprised if it is sooner.

i was reading the comments on the blog and Julie said that this year they are accepting roughly 1400 oos students for the first deadline. is this number standard from previous years, or are they accepting more.

21.69% of applicants admitted EA OOS....thats not TOOOOOO bad is it?

Carolinaheel-

I saw that comment also. That number seems unusually high......I was thinking more around 500 for the first deadline.

I'm so nervous for Jan. 15th.
I'm OOS & UNC is a reach.
Gahhh.

Ok so after reading the latest comments on the blog, I found out that there were about 8000 OOS EA applicants this year. So, as I suspected, OOS applicants were largely responsible for the increase in applications this year. Although, I'm still surprised that they are planning to accept 1400 EA OOS applicants! There is an NC law that limits OOS applicants to 18% of total acceptances. Let's looks at the simple math here....UNC admitted about 7000 total (both EA and RD) last year. 18% of 7000 is very close to 1400 already....and they haven't even started RD applications yet! I'm not really sure what's going on lol...

Either they will accept very very few RD OOS applicants, Julia misspoke, they plan to break the law(lol), or they will admit a lot more people this year.

Or, I made some kind of mistake above. If anyone can clarify this situation, it would be greatly appreciated.

Either way, I suspect a lot of people are going to get deferred this year....good luck!

Sometimes I wish I didn't know about all of this online stuff - the admissions blog, college confidential, etc. If I hadn't been so darn curious I'd have been waiting patiently for the 15th the whole time :P The more information I get, the more anxious it makes me! Do you really think they're accepting more OOS EA applicants? That sounds too fortuitous to be true.

They usually accept 2,400 OOS kids out of about 11,000 OOS applicants (both RD and EA). If you do the math- that's about a 21% acceptance rate. This is becasue not ALL the oos kids they accpet will attend UNC. Based on the percentage of OOS students that usually enroll, UNC is able to accept 21% of applicants, and still meet the state enrollment requirements- 18%.

But still, UNC is extremely tough to get into. OOS applicants are always top students.

kelceylein- I'm not sure at all. I'm very confused right now. 1400 is usually the TOTAL number of OOS applicants admitted. But this year it seems they are accepting that many during EA itself. It makes no sense to me.

But I am an in state applicant. It was good news for me to know that there were 8000 OOS applicants. That means the in-state acceptance rate will stay about the same (I hope). This whole thing is so nerve-wrecking. I find myself checking the UNC blog/website about every 5 min. hahaha.

EDIT:

Bonzai-
Thank you for posting that. That clears up a lot. Disregard my last posts haha.

Yeah they accept extras because the people that don't end up getting Robertson/Morehead but move on far with it often end up going to Ivies and other great schools. So they'll compensate and accept a higher amount then will actually attend

you are also forgetting all of the out of state recruited athletes that are admitted under ea....

yeah but that still seems like alot. i think that julie just made a typo

Ok, so I've got to add some fuel to this fire...

Anyone remember the column published in the Daily Tar Heel right after the first deadline? Mr. Farmer stated "This year, 6,452 students from outside of North Carolina applied for early admission to UNC, a 24 percent increase from last year." I saw that someone from admissions said on the blog comment section that there were around 8,000 OOS applicants? Which is correct? Hmmmmmm?

I reallllllly need to have all internet privileges revoked until the 15th ;)

Oh man I forgot about that....

I'd like to say that 8000 is just 6,452 rounded up....but it's obviously not. I really hope its 8000 lol. Sorry if this sounds selfish, but I need the number of in state applicants as low as possible.

EDIT:

Update from the Admissions Blog-

"...we received approximately 7400 instate applications and admitted about 3500. "

First of all, this is good news for me and many in state applicants. The acceptance rate is pretty much the same as last year.
HOWEVER, MORE IMPORTANTLY*
Notice how the person said "admitted", implying that decisions have already been made; for in-state applicants anyway. Could this be a clue that we will see decisions posted very soon (tomorrow?!)...

I don't think so.....

I really dont think that they are trying to fool us or anything. With the deadline this close, I'm guessing that 98% of the decisions have already been made. At this point, I think (and this is only my opinion) they are working on apps with special circumstances; apps that they cant decide to defer, to accept, or (hopefully not ;( ) deny. When throwing around numbers like that, its pretty easy to use the tense "accepted." Just my 2 cents...now back to studying for those AP stats and anatomy tests that are frst thing tomorrow :(

Haha, that would be me commenting on the admissions blog noting the past tense. :)

Seriously, WarriorTi22. Someone needs to forcibly seize my laptop.

As for me, I don't think we're going to get anything until next week. Wednesday is the earliest I could fathom receiving notifications - they've stressed the 15th so much now!

WarriorTi22
I saw that article also, and I was wondering the same thing! It seems wierd that there's such a disparity between the numbers.

make it go faster!!!!! ahhh i can't wait

"UPDATE:
Hi all - I believe what I wrote earlier to anonymous 1 may have been confusing. I said we've received 8,000 out of state applications - that includes all first deadline AND what we've received SO FAR for second deadline. As Steve, our Director, stated above we received about 6,500 for first deadline only.

Sorry for the confusion! If we received 8,000 just for first deadline we'd certainly still be reading.

Good night,
Erin Breese"
