safety for me

UW is a great school for a safety for many in-staters.

frop- did you meet the 70 AI?

UDub is a great school-safety or not. We are in Ca., and I can't think of a school here (besides Stanford!) that has the same mix of qualities and characteristics that the UW has. There are great schools here (and don't misunderstand me--some more prestigious, exclusive, etc), but just not the same mix as what Seattle, the U, and surrounding area offers. On the west coast, I think UW is a gem--especially for in-staters. If only it had that Ca. weather!

One of my friends just got in and he is a running start student. His AI was over 80 though. I'm still just waiting...

hey seven. I really can't apply to any LAC's because money is a huge problem, and I won't get any scholarships with those stats (also i'm an international). So, right now, UW is my top choice, then UT-Austin, then UW-Madison. Those three are the best three that has the best price to prestige ratio. :) I really hope I get into UW though...

UW is still my top choice. There's not really many schools in the area that hold much of an advantage over it. The cheaper cost to go there as an in-stater doesn't hurt either.

Whitman and Western are my other schools that I wouldn't mind going to, but neither really seem to have any strong advantage over UW that would make them my first pick.

Whitman is ranked much higher than the UW. If it was up to me I would go to Whitman because they are more "respected." Applying to like med school (or whatever school after u get ur BA) with a ex. 3.6 from Whitman is stonger than a 3.6 from the UW.

Whitman:

Challenging its students to excel in the sciences, the humanities, the arts, and the social sciences, Whitman College is one of the nation's leading liberal arts colleges. It combines the educational values of the best liberal arts colleges of the East with the outdoor frankness and vigor of the Pacific Northwest. Since 1859, men and women have chosen this private, independent college because of its commitment to undergraduate education. With just 1,400 students and an average class size of 14, Whitman encourages students to be active participants in their own education.

Admission: 2,143 applied, 1,196 admitted, 362 enrolled, 3.76 average high school GPA
Test scores: SAT verbal scores over 500 98%, SAT math scores over 500 99%, ACT scores over 18 100%, SAT verbal scores over 600 85%, SAT math scores over 600 82%, ACT scores over 24 88%, SAT verbal scores over 700 40%, SAT math scores over 700 28%, ACT scores over 30 45%

UW:

Admission: 15,950 applied, 10,884 admitted, 4,771 enrolled, 3.67 average high school GPA
Test scores: SAT verbal scores over 500 83%, SAT math scores over 500 91%, ACT scores over 18 96%, SAT verbal scores over 600 44%, SAT math scores over 600 58%, ACT scores over 24 68%, SAT verbal scores over 700 10%, SAT math scores over 700 15%, ACT scores over 30 16%

These stats are from like 2-3 years ago so it's probably harder to get into both of em.

Site I got this from:

I have a friend that attends Whitman. The campus definitely isn't as diverse as UW, but their academics are top notch. It's also a smaller college. Special attention is given to each student so there are very few that ever fail and drop out.

On the other hand, UW is in a more active city, has a ton of students and much more diversity. You'll have to be more self-motivated to be successful though, since there's "weeder" classes to get rid of the students that aren't fit for college material.

There's no arguement that Whitman's stats are higher, but the location, size and costs just aren't as appealing. It's also huge on the greek thing, which I guess is a plus or minus depending on who you are. Whitman only has 1,400 some students I think. The options you have as far as courses and degrees go are much more limited. The atomosphere is just completely different.

I still think it's a very nice school. It just seems it's not a school everyone, especially someone like myself, would enjoy. If I get accepted I plan on checking into it a little deeper, but I doubt that's going to happen anyway.

Finally my online status has changed to reviewed. :)
Been previously preliminary since Nov 4th.

Dopke, nah Im at a 65...

:) That's great Dopke!!!

My application has been in preliminary since November 4th too, but it still hasn't been reviewed yet. Your application being reviewed has given me new hope!

Good Job Dopke!

My status just changed today too! Do you have a message like this:

"Your application was given an initial review, and a final admission decision is pending. If further information is required, we will contact you by mail."

That "pending" has me kind of worried. Someone posted a message like this earlier in the forum. Have they heard the results yet?

Mines the:

"Your application has been reviewed. All applicants are informed of admission decisions by mail when results of the review process become available. "

Your message I think means that you are going to comprehensive review :( I'm guessing your AI was sub-70? Good luck!

Oh Geez! That isn't good. I did fall under a 3.7 this last quarter so it dropped me to an AI of 66 (SAT 1220.) I hope I didn't botch the essays! I think they went pretty well. Either way it turns out I hope I hear a reply soon from UW.

It is clear now:

Message A: "Your application has been reviewed. All applicants are informed of admission decisions by mail when results of the review process become available."

Those getting this message have higher AIs and are getting notice of acceptance shortly after.

Message B: "Your application has been given an initial review, and a final admission decision is pending. If futher information is required we will notify you by mail."

Every person who got this message so far, including my d, has reported an AI in the middle 60s. Comprehensive review will include the essays and other stuff and maybe even a request for first semester senior grades.

Can anyone provide an example of anyone who got in shortly after getting the initial review message?

according to the web some person got message B and it changed to message A after like 2-3 months...she got in. But I don't think message A means you're in for sure (especially in about a month when rejections start coming?). I think it just means that they have decided what they wanna do with u and u will hear from them in a week. Since they arent really rejecting any people right now we see all of the pple who get in with Message A.

Also Message B seems to be for all type of AI below 70. (another friend of mine got like AI of 58 and he got that message...but I wouldnt be surprised if he got in)

You are right on it mmboys... if you get Message A anytime from now until mid February, I'd say you are in, but after mid-Feb, it could either be rejection or acceptance.

My friend who got Message B "initial review" has been initial review for about 3 weeks... so that fits in with what you concluded there.

S snail mailed a paper app about Nov. 29 or 30 from out of state.

Entered into their data base Dec. 9. In the week before Xmas, it said awaiting prelim review.

Didn't look again until today and it now says that it was updated on Jan. 5 - app has been reviewed and will be informed by mail.

Hope that helps - sorry I can't say what happened message-wise between Dec. 9 and Jan. 5. GC thought he has a great chance so maybe there was no intermediate message. But we will wait to see an acceptance before speculating!

Thanks everyone - have been lurking a bit and your analysis has been helpful.
