If you enter UMass as an undeclared major how hard is it exactly to get into the major of your choice? Since this would be my first choice, for example how difficult for me would it be to get into the Isenberg School of Management for Sports Management after already taking some courses?

Some (maybe most) majors - easy.

Other majors - if you have kept up with the requirements and don’t wait too long it is doable (engineering).

A few majors, like Sports Management, are extremely competitive to get admitted into as a freshman, and are also difficult to switch to later.

This page implies that if you meet the course criteria you can get it after 2 semesters, but I think that is just a gateway requirement - you still have to be accepted in competition with other students who want to get in.

How does admission work at UMass Amherst?

Are you admitted without regard to which major you stated on your application?

Or is admission determined within the major you selected (as is done in many state colleges), meaning you are being compared to the others who selected that same major?

As I understand it, you can give a major when you apply, and you are either admitted into that major or admitted as undeclared.

Certain majors have higher standards and are tougher to be admitted into, such as sports management, nursing, and engineering.

I know for engineering, even if you are admitted into the engineering school, after your freshman year you have to apply for a particular one (e.g. chemical engineering), and I guess if your GPA is too low you can be denied.
