I got a C in calculus and chemistry(both AP). I am from winston salem(forsyth county) and I know that wake county is pretty competitive. UNC claims that they don't have a quota for each area, but I think that in a sense they are not going to accept 500 people from the charlotte area. I also know of alot of kids that had stats that were not even close to mine, and they still got in. I understand that there is not a set formula to get in, but I feel that I am much more qualified than alot of the kids that did get in from my county EA.

misstinax3, you are from minnesota?

yep i am =] any particular reason why you asked?

well i moved from minnesota about a year ago.

fobby what debate team do you captain?.....im not familiar with a program in winston. also, im pretty surprised that you were deferred in state, especially with those stats- good luck on regular admission

fobby, are you sure you were/are considered in-state? I know it's required to live in NC for at LEAST a year, so if you only moved "about a year ago," maybe you weren't actually considered IS (the requirements are VERY strict).

Yeah, you might need to check up on that, that could change a lot of things, especially tuition costs.

fobby--really? thats pretty cool. which school did you go to? i go to wayzata..if you've heard of it lol

I went to Rosemount High School up till my sophmore year and then moved to North Carolina. So you also got deferred??? (I remember facing wayzata in numerous debate tournaments)

ohh yeah that doesnt surprise me. we're pretty insane when it comes to debate/speech

nope, i got accepted surprisingly

tylers, I moved from minnesota about a year or so ago, and i was the debate captain there, tylers were you deferred? Thanks for the luck.

19382, I have been living in north carolina for a year and a half, and I made sure that I was considered in state by calling in.

i was accepted in state

My friend Hilary told me that midyear grades and new SAT scores are the best way to distinguish yourself in the deferred applicants pool b/c they have already seen everything else. (I was deferred)

In that case, your grades do in fact stand out.

My grades were pretty good as well
AP Lit and Comp - B (1 of only 2 Bs) - my teacher wrote a letter describing how difficult her class is
AP Calc - A (only A)
Spanish II - A
Digital Communications - A

And my SAT was a 1650 when admissions first saw my application (sounds low but I live in a VERY underrepresented county in NC) and an 1150 cr + m (a girl from my school got in with that score last year)... However, my SAT changed to an 1740 from Dec. test and eventually to an 1850 from Jan. Test and a 1260 cr + m.

The highest SAT of anyone accepted into UNC from my school in its 5 year existence was a 1240 so hopefully what Hillary says is right. 200 pt. increase in SAT is huge (in my opinion) and a 1260 is a very solid score for my county.

Any comments in reference to what I just said? Anyone?

btw, i'm like either #2 or #3 out of about 200 and ECs were outstanding by far (world poverty awareness projects in Philippines, pres. of NHS, captain of Varsity Soccer, etc., etc., etc.)

My SAT HAD to be the reason i was deferred... or one of the main reasons. (also, i will graduate w/ 4 APs - most my school offers)

My OOS friend who was deferred took two SAT subject tests (Math 1 and 2; 780 and 770) that will hopefully get there to be considered even though UNC said they won't. He also got a rec from his principal who offered to write one when he was initially applying (said he'd be proud to write it, so I hope that means it's good). Also, another additional rec from an alumni he's known since he was a baby. Midterm grades, 3 A's and 2 B's in all AP classes.

Hopefully it works! And I'm hoping for all you guys on here too!
