Deferred - Abandon ship or truck on through?

MSU sent me a letter today asking for 7th semester grades. I’m still unsure whether or not I want to pursue a career in Astrophysics now (since they graduate more Physics degrees then they have jobs open) or go the Firefighting route (which would not involve MSU). Still, it would be nice to at least say I was able to get in.

So thus I have a few questions:

What can I do to increase my chances of getting in?

Does this mean I need to wait until April now to get an answer back, rather then the November 30th deadline?

After being deferred, what are the odds of someone getting in?

You knew this was coming… I have a 26 ACT, a 3.25 GPA (a few AP classes), and am captain of the Wrestling team. My first report card of the senior year has 3 As and 3 A-s. What are my chances of getting in if I send them my new grades?

Another thing…

Since scholarships are handed out in December/January and I don’t get an answer until April, does this mean that I am out of any kind of scholarship that MSU might offer? I’ve gotten two scholarships from the state of Michigan already (Michigan Merit and one for the ACT score), however that is not nearly enough money as I live in a low income, single parent household.

A friend of my daughter got the same letter and he has very similar stats to yours. I don’t really have any information on the deferral, but those grades certainly sound like they could only help, not hinder your application. You will still be considered for financial aid when you are admitted later, don’t worry about that. When people are talking about scholarship deadlines, they are referring to merit based aid. That is awarded to people with high stats that make the U want to basically bribe them to attend. You will be considered based on need, which is a whole different set of criteria, that does not usually take into account your stats, just your financial situation.

definitely go for it. if you do well 7th semester, you’ll get in. my friend had the same thing happen to her, did well and submitted her 7th semester grades, and got in :)

sigh

It’s worth a shot. Now I just need to figure out how I am going to muster up the willpower to get all A’s one more quarter and still keep up with wrestling.

3 or 4 kids from my high school last year got in after they got deferred, so it’s definitely possible, keep those grades up, send them in, and MSU gives really good financial aid if you are in-state

I just left a thread that mentions how Michigan State University don’t really give out financial aid.

My friend has a very low-income family and is from in-state, and she received enough financial aid to have most if not all of it paid for. Fin. aid is awarded on a case-by-case basis. Don’t solely depend on financial aid from MSU though

And definitely truck on through; I heard that about half of those deferred eventually get accepted.

Hmm… very interesting.
