I was deferred too, and everything I’m reading on this site literally makes me feel like my stomach is dropping because everyone who got accepted has stats so much better than mine. I’d be happy if I even got into NUIn
Sat:1390 on new, 1930 on old
Act: 28 but I didn’t send it
UW GPA: 3.8
Extracurricular: 200 hours of volunteering with key club and interact club, 2 years of placing at FBLA regional competition, and in about 2 other small, random clubs at school
Jobs: worked 3 years as a hostess at a restaurant, worked 8 months as sales in retail
Essay: wrote about my experience growing up in a family restaurant with immigrant parents. Submitted additional essays on my app stat check page, and they were about my curiosity for my culture and an additional essay about the surroundings of the family restaurant my parents ran
AP: Chinese 5 (didn’t take class), HGAP 3, WHAP 4, US history 3, Bio 4
Senior year: I’m taking it real chill, which I denfinitely regret, since they did receive a copy of my mid year transcript. Taking 6/7 classes I can take in a day, taking Spanish 3 pass/fail (meaning no numeral grade, only thing recorded in transcript is whether I passed or failed), and honors social studies courses (I usually take AP)
Additional info: first generation college student, bilingual (mandarin. Trilingual if u count the Fuzhou regional dialect)
I got rejected (well, they offered me a place in their CAP program but that’s basically rejection) from UT Austin which is really discouraging esp since NE is so much more competitive… I applied for international business major at NE which is also discouraging bc it’s so competitive, but I applied for it bc I really want nothing less than that. I have no talents or skills so that’s also discouraging. Does anyone happen to know what percentage of applicants were deferred from ED/EA? I’m starting to feel like almost everyone was which is extra discouraging. Basically I’m very discouraged. I’m not religious at all but I might go pay Buddha a visit this Sunday (at a local Vietnamese temple even tho I’m Chinese) bc I really need some spiritual uplifting. Plus there’s nothing more I can do that’s in my power but pray and beg deities and spirits and all things holy and wish-granting.
Btw my parents make 120k-400k a year (they do investment stuff so it varies greatly each year). I applied for financial aid bc our family had 2 bad years (I blame Texas and the oil prices). Does this info actually make a difference though? I’m just wondering bc other ppl have been posting this info…
Well UT Austin CAP program is still pretty good, I mean its one year at UT Dallas or something then UT austin for the rest of the year. Are you OOS student? I got CAP as well I am OOS and I am considering it.
Don’t worry about not getting in NE, they take more kids regular decison then EA.
UT Dallas is not an option, unfortunately. I would suggest u go pick ur school right now because I wanted UTSA but didn’t get to it before it filled up. Picking school started at 6 I believe on 2/24 and I logged in at 6:07 and UTSA was full. The contract is not binding so I went ahead and picked Arlington. That way I have an option to fall back on in case out of state schools don’t work out for me. I live in Texas, which is what I believe screwed me over for UT. I’m not in the top 7% at my school bc my school is incredibly competitive (I almost transferred schools so I could have a higher rank, bc my school is the most competitive in the district) so I dont believe I had a fair shot at UT. Bc UT gives auto admit to top 7%, and almost all in state seats are filled by the auto admits Go pick ur CAP school!!!
@vzee1105 I’m not sure why you think NEU is more competitive than UT Austin. My son was rejected by UT (well, CAP’d, but basically the same thing, as you say), but admitted to NEU and offered honors and a very nice scholarship. UT is especially tough for the more competitive majors, including business.
@Sybylla College is a big deal for my family bc my parents didn’t have the opportunity, so they are supporting me financially all the way. I’m not taking out loans bc my parents started from very very little and a lot of family debt, and they don’t want me to have such heavy debt like they did. Parents income isn’t as much as most who attend NEU but they have a lot of real estate investments they say they will sell if it comes down to it. Very thankful for my amazing parents! ill also try to be working part time (weird but I really love retail!) for some of my own spending money. So all I need and want is an acceptance letter. Even NUin would be amazing because I’m super interested in studying abroad in China!
I got deferred too and I need to stop looking at this site too because I feel like I’m not getting in either!
ACT: 31
SAT: 1350 (i know not super strong)
W GPA: 4.02 (freshman year took me down) but I got a 4.5 GPA all first semester this year with 4 AP’s and 2 Honors Classes.
TBH I really want to know why I was deferred. Even before applying, I knew my scores and grades aren’t good enough, but I applied anyways bc I have a 0% chance if I don’t apply. I don’t understand why they didn’t reject me straight up. Any insights @neutopschool
I applied for business so that prob lowers my chances even more. However I do feel like with eithe of our grades, NUin might be possible
EA was super duper competitive, the kids from my school that got in all had like 34 ACTs and great GPAs. I’m not surprised I got deferred. Also I think they are being really picky with who they accept because so many people applied this year.
I applied for bioengineering. The major we apply to does not affect our chances of getting in.
I really want to get into NUin but I need sooo much financial aid to do that. I just want to find out already! the waiting is killing me.
My school uses this thing called naviance and from my school last year 18 people got accepted, so I’m hoping I can be a part of that number this year! my stats are well above the stats of the kids that didn’t get in from my high school in previous years so I’m hoping for the best, but honestly anything can happen at this point.
No one at my school applied to Northeastern. We have 781 seniors. I know I’m the only one bc the registrar’s didn’t have NEU’s address. I’m surprised 18 ppl from ur school know of northeastern! What kind of school in what state do u go to? I’m at a Texas public high school that’s super competitive(everyone in top 25% have GPAs of 3.8 or greater)
I applied to 10 in total:
Clemson (accepted)
University of Miami (accepted)
Catholic University (accepted)
UCONN (accepted)
Villanova (D)
NEU(D)
Richmond, Lafayette, GW, and Union I haven’t received anything yet
Ok listen u guys I think u definitely have a shot. I wanna give u hope by saying that I got in with 1300, and I learned recently from my guidance counselor that she made a mistake on my transcript, so they might have thought that I had 1290. U guys have amazing stats and NEU would be lucky to have you. Be prepared for rejection, because at the end of the day it is a crapshoot, but also know that you entirely deserve to go to NEU. One thing that really helped me deal with school rejections was writing myself a note to read if I got rejected. Mine basically just said to go for a run and then reread Harry Potter lol. But seriously though, it helps.
@slowrunner7 thank you for your reply! I saw a couple of your posts on other discussions, and I am really happy for you that you got in because it seems that you are very elated I really wanted regular admission at first but after some research, I am really interested in the NUin program! if you are participating in this program, where are you planning to go? also, for my essay I wrote about the interesting environment I was raised in and my relationship with my parents, and I had my friend read it. She didn’t like it, but I don’t know if its because she’s too dense to understand the way (sorry but she really isn’t that bright…) I write or if it really is just crappy. Another friend said it was good, and my english teacher liked it, but I’m not sure if they were just trying to make me feel better. I submitted it anyways because I wrote it literally the 2 days apps were due (i decided last minute for EA) and couldnt write anything better. I didn’t see anything you wrote that pertains to the essay you submitted, so I figure it might be too personal to share. However, I still want to ask if theres anything at all that you can share about your essay? Aside from my grades, the essay is what I’m most insecure about.
I’m heard rumors in other discussions saying next week, the 15th. That date is close to past years’ release date, which is why others believe it’ll be the 15th @422525
