Deferred from Wake Forest...Next Steps?

Hey everyone,
I just found out last night that I was deferred from Wake Forest ED1. This is really disappointing to me because I’ve considered Wake to be the perfect school for me for a long time. Despite the disappointment, I have to keep looking forward.
I’m planning to keep my Wake application active; however, I don’t expect an acceptance, since I hear most deferred applicants don’t get in. I have 4 other active applications at UofSC, UVA, UTK, and FSU. Now, I’m thinking about possible ED2s: Davidson, Tulane, and Emory. Here are my stats:

31 composite 32 SS
3.96 UW
Took all honors/DE/AP classes available to me
Good extracurriculars that line up with my major (political science)
Great letters of rec
Not full pay
Resides in Chattanooga, Tennessee

Because of my Wake deferral, I’m wondering if any of these schools are in reach for me. If anyone has any other college recommendations (or words of advice), that would be wonderful.

You should research the University of Richmond, if you haven’t done so already. With more information and a new perspective, you might like it as much as Wake Forest.

Thank you! I have done so, and I will probably apply. It’s a little farther from home than I would like, but no biggie!

Rhodes shares many similarities with Wake and is worth a look unless the lack of D1 athletics is a deal-breaker. The social scene is noticeably more mellow than at Wake, and in my opinion Rhodes has a more attractive campus.

Consider Furman as well.

Hi! I was also deferred from Wake ED 1 back in October, and I love the University of Richmond just as much as Wake, so I was able to apply ED 1 to Richmond (since I heard back before their ED deadline)! I recommend doing some research on UofR because it is very similar to Wake.

Just from looking at your stats (obviously not taking your statement and supplements into consideration), I think UVA and Tulane are all reaches for you. I loved UVA and always wanted to go, but it’s extremely hard to get accepted out of state. I know people who applied with a 35-36 ACT and 5-8 AP classes, and they were rejected, so I decided not to apply.

I know Tulane accepts many people Early Decision, so I think your chances increase if you were to apply ED 2. Have you looked at Clemson (as a target/safety?) Also, look into Elon University as another target/safety. I visited the campus, and it is absolutely beautiful.

Also, if you decide to ED 2 to Davidson, Tulane, or Emory, I still recommend applying RD to the other 2/3 that you didn’t choose.

Deferrals will be as wild this year as the rest of the admission process. Who knows, it may cut in your favor!

We know a student who was deferred from Wake last year and got in RD but decided to go to Clemson. We are in the midwest so it’s not like Clemson was closer for her. She’s loving it and hasn’t looked back.

My daughter was deferred in ED1 and then accepted in RD with a Presidential Scholarship to Wake. We did the same ED2 calculations and after the deferral she applied ED 2 to Tulane. If she’d been accepted outright then she’d be there now but they accepted her as a Spring Scholar which isn’t binding so she was able to see how Wake (and other applications) played out. It worked out in the end but it was stressful. Her stats were a bit lower than yours but she had high rigor at a top school, was a three sport varsity athlete (not D1 material though) and was nationally recognized in her instrument. My guess is you have a shot at those schools but you’ll be competing with many with similar stats so it’s hard to know how it will play out especially in this unusual application cycle. In the past, odds of getting in to Tulane are much improved by going ED. In RD, it’s a long shot for everyone.

same for my son.

Just reading your post on the blog about students deferred at Wake forest. What happened eventually? Did you get accepted and where did you end up?
