Do I stand a chance?! This is for LSA though. Is there hope for me?
Is anyone familiar with the bridge program? Can I do that?
Because I was at U of M one weekend and I was speaking to other black students and they had 24’s and 25’s and got in!!!

It looks to me that anybody who has less than 3.8 UW GPA are mostly in the waiting list. Weighted average doesn’t mean anything for UofM. Well, UofM is competitive. There are too many students with >3.8 UW GPa and most of these students got admission letters.

yeah but i feel like weighted gpa should count a little more? why did i take all those AP/honors classes then?

where did we prove this “letter means nothing?”

@littlemeow… you took those AP/honors classes because most schools want to see that you took the most rigorous curriculum possible. It will pay off for you in the end, I promise…

@granipc thank you, it just smetimes feels like i should have taken regular classes and gotten a 4.0

Just remember

1) Your only source of info is the stories you hear
2) No one can lie on the internet
3) you all go to the most competitive, well respected , bestest high school in the country
4) Weighted GPA doesn’t matter at all, even though course rigor does, so you would think weighted does but it totally doesn’t…

@littlemeow… believe me, I understand. My son has coasted through AP classes for the most part, but my daughter is going to be a different story. She WANTS the more challenging classes, but she really has to work hard for even a B sometimes. I have always felt that as long as you can maintain at least a B in a class, you should go for the AP/Honors class, but now that we’re going through this process and I’m seeing what it takes to get into some of these schools, I’m not sure if that will still be my advice when she gets to high school and is taking classes that factor into her GPA.

yeah, i never did awful in those classes (except Honors Chem), i always managed a B+ or A-. but i kind of wish i took accelerated classes rather than honors, and got all As. I feel like i wouldn’t be in this position if i had done that

@littlemeow… like I have told my son, you will end up where you are supposed to be, and I am guessing you will be wonderfully successful no matter where you choose!

@granipc thank you so much! hoping i end up in a good business program.

Deferred. A little surprised I thought I would be rejected because this is my farthest reach. 30 act and 3.6 weighted. DECA, debate with a leadership role, political internship, work experience, anti-drug promotion, track all 4 years, junior optimist international chapter board member, class executive board every year, academic tutor for 3 years and advisory board member. 3 APs and several honors. Really good essays and recommendations. Anyone know the stats for acceptances from the deferred list? Or have any idea of the date we find out?

I have a 3.9 UW GPA and was deferred…
The whole admission process is such a lottery it seems =/

emshi, UM doesn’t reject anyone who applies EA.

Lol @ ThisIsMichigan

I see a lot of people who got deferred with low UW GPAs/bad course rigor. That’s just me though. Anything under a 3.8 UW at UM looks bad…

I have a 3.67 GPA (Sophmore year, missed 40% of Pre-Calc to take an English 101-102 class which had no weight on my GPA, plus my Dad being off at Kuwait and unable to help me…). Still, I have a 31 on my ACT (33 superscored), have taken AP classes and have kept up the most rigorous courseload my school was capable of offering (admittedly my high school isn’t really “competitive” at all - just a small rural place…), several ECs that I’ve been involved in my entire life. I’m an Asian-Female applying to LSA and (though it seems irrelevant now) I got the “good” deferral letter.

Eghlfluflugghghghhh… I’m in better spirits than Friday evening, anyways. Several current U-M students told me they think I have a great chance to go, given the circumstances that lead to my GPA and my strengths outside of that. Still, panic. :(

Roughly 40,000 applications at UofM for 6000 seats. Usually UofM sends out admission letters to about 12,000, but finally only 6000 to 6500 students join (that means most of these kids will end up at IVES). Almost all of these accepted kids have >3.8 UW GPA with roughly 5 to 6 SCIENCE/Math APs (course rigor) and >27 ACT score. Note that all of the above 3 is a MUST to get accepted. Hell with Weighted GPA. Schools are stupid to give Weighted GPA in their grade reports.

Remember my little Hugh schoolers, EVERYTHING you read on the internet about this process is true.

not understanding why weighted GPAs are stupid? they give a student credit and recognition for rigor of curriculum.

For Texas kids the weighted classes are necessary to boost class rank, since the Texas schools are required to admit kids who are in the top 10% of their class (UT is now at top 7%)… at my son’s school the cut-off for top 10% was somewhere around a 4.44, so while the colleges may not look at the actual weighted GPA, many DO look at your rank. If classes aren’t weighted, there is no way to differentiate and give an advantage to kids who take the harder course load. A kid who chooses to take all regular classes and scores a solid 4.0 will not even be in the top quarter of their class at our high school.
