Deferred

Trying Lion, I am afraid that there is little that you can do. They hold OOS students to a higher standard, and the BARE MINIMUM to be considered for admission is at least a 500 on all sections of the SAT. So 1560 and a 21 ACT for OOS is a problem. If they did not defer you, I think you can always call and speak with an admissions counselor for advice. But I have to be honest with you, I think that you need to spend the next 2-3 weeks getting back-up applications completed and submitted to other Universities. There is a univeristy out there that will be a better match for you. You do not want to have to pay OOS tuition only to find that you are having to drop courses (with no refunds) and struggling to keep up.

Smilemaker, have your daughter call and make contact with an admissions counselor. If you live close enough, consider a trip up to meet with an admissions counselor. If she applied for fall 09, call and ask if she can be considered for summer 09. Ask if her application can be taken out of the fall pool totally and put into SUMMER. With a visit up, take all transcripts both HS and CC, as well as all test scores. They will sit and review and help you to understand where she stands.

My D visited FSU the summer before senior year hs and we visited admissions and spoke with a counselor. We knew her SAT math to date was problematic, but we really thought she could squeeze by. We were told no--probably not and were given a number to shoot for. D left in tears. We went home and regrouped. We did private math tutoring with a local math teacher now retired who did SAT prep. She started in late July, took the SAT again in early Oct and got an acceptance to FSU for Summer 08.

I would suggest a few private tutoring sessions. Sometimes focused prep can really pay off. We first went to Huntington, she took a formal timed practice test that included a meeting to review her scores ($100 after a $50 coupon they had in the office--just ask for it). We got a written breakdown of the exact areas she needed work in. We got a hard sell on spending $3500 for a program to bring all her scores up, when we only needed Math. We left and found the math tutor who looked over the Huntington report and ran with it. D spent an hour a week for maybe 7 weeks total in tutoring $70/hr, with another 1-2 hours a week at home using the CB Blue Book doing practice problems in the areas she needed work as assigned by the tutor. I know we did not spent over $500 for the 7 weeks. Part of D's problem was some test anxiety. She really became more relaxed over the whole process, took the SAT early Oct and raised her math some 90 points.

It's only early Dec. Perhaps taking a diagnostic SAT at one of the prep centers, and finding a CR/Writing tutor for Dec (esp over break) and Jan and taking a Feb SAT or ACT again. I think it can be done. What general vicinity in FL are you?
You can PM me if you want.

TryingLion - I agree with you and SunnyFlorida that your time and money could be better spent finding a college that does not use high standardized test scores for admission.

For deferred students, there is still much hope that with improved grades and/or standardized test scores you will gain full admission. Look for backup options as well.

smilemaker,

If your D is already dual enrolled at a CC, have her get an AA as quickly as possibly and just transfer in to FSU. Not sure if this still exists, but many years ago I took CLEP tests and two semesters at CC and had my AA before my friends graduated from HS.

With AP, dual enrollment and summer classes, she could have an AA fast and still get to go to the college she wants, perhaps even UF. It might be a semester or two later, but you don't have to worry about SAT scores and essays as much.

I had an F on my transcript too, probably a lot like the OP's. It was an FLVS class that was dropped after the grace period. I was accepted however.

hey, this may sound kinda random, but sunnyflorida mentioned how they hold out of state applicants at a higher standard, does anyone know what exactly those standards are? i saw on the website it does verify what sunnyflorida said, i was just wondering what exactly those numbers are. thanks =)

sorry LorraineMichaels but my problem is different. I have a F in a class im just sitting in at school but since its on the transcript it may be the same since they won know. I will receive an A in the class on FLVS though. I talked to the officer and he said just to make sure they know its audited because they may not see the small notes on transcripts

SunriseGoodbyes: They seem to keep that a secret. I have not seen any specific numbers. The reasons are clear, though. FSU is a state supported university, and OOS tuition used to not, in fact, totally cover the cost to educate a student at FSU. Since the school is state supported, and the state generated tax/fee income was helping to educate OOS students, preference was given to in-state students. Now with the tuition differential, it has become more profitable for FSU to take OOS students. There was a thread on this board a few months ago about this. So this year they may be taking more OOS students. So this can be a good thing for you!

thanks! i am out of state, but i have the florida prepay program so i'm pretty sure i dont even count as out of state.. i dont think anyways? for UF and USF i was told i counted as a florida resident, but since my transcript and such arent from florida they have to know i'm oos, but since my tuition is payed for for the most part, i'm pretty sure just my grades/sat scores are what'll (hopefully) get me in

To Smilemaker: Tell your Daughter not to give up on this Deferral. My neice was deferred, we made an appt with an admissions advisor, and pleaded our case. Let them knowo that SHE wants to attend FSU. I beleive her grades, ACT scores speak well for acceptance. Perhaps they overlooked her. Tell them that she is willing to attend SUMMER, and I believe you can turn this around.

By the way my neice got an acceptance. Also I believe UF is a longshot....so don't give in don't give up....the sale starts at no. Your bright daughter deserves to be a Semilnole! Fight for it!....they like that.

Smilemaker: PM me if you would like to hear about Alabama from a current student. I have enjoyed my time there but I am 95% sure I want to transfer to FSU. It was my original top pick but I was an OOS student with Florida Pre-Paid so I had in-state tuition...that killed me...which leads me to sunrisegoodbyes

Sunrisegoodbyes: I sure hope having the Florida Pre-Paid and being OOS does not come back to bite you in the ass like it did with me. Mind posting your grades/scored or PM'ing them to me? As someone who was in your exact position, I hopefully can give you some perspective.

Btw, anyone know when they send out transfer decisions?

Smilemaker. Contact Jannis Finney. She is the Director of Admissions. Go see her with your daughter if you can. She will be glad to take her file on personally. You can't get any better than that. She is the end game in admissions and a WONDERFUL person. If your daughter REALLY wants to get into FSU, she will find a way to make it happen for you.

I was deferred too. i had a 1050/1560 SAT and a 23 on the ACT.. now i have an 1170/1680 and still a 23.. but my gpa was a 4.32 on my first senior semester and my gpa is a 3.8. i hope i get in :)

should i ask a director of admissions to make my chances? or is it pointless? if so where do i communicate with them and what do i ask?

I also contacted Ms. Finney. She took the time to personally look over my transcript, etc. However, my math score was very low and she suggested retaking SAT's. Stressed that my chances of acceptance were nil without raising it. She has pulled my file and is personally tracking my progress for admission. What more can you ask for. I emailed her and she responded within 3 days. It's easy to find her address on the website.

Cheesebiz, Janice Finney IS wonderful! she calmned my nerves and gave me optimism that my daughter would get in. she pulled up my daughter's info, went over everything on the phone with me and said to "sit tight". She couldn't tell me yay or nay but was caring, took her time with me and answered my questions. I'd say that FSU is lucky to have her. thanks for the contact name.

SAT SCORE: 1830
ACT: 27
attend school on a musical theatre scholarship…had great extracurriculars including varsity sports, tons of theatre, instrument, etc, community service, grades were good (I think I did not get in because I have never taken one AP class in high school until this year…that is definitely where I screwed up)… even have managed my own eBay store since freshman year
and…
still got deferred. it happens… hopefully my audition in january will speak for itself
