Desktop bookcase

Has anyone here purchased a desktop-type bookcase that you don’t have to assemble? Can y’all recommend good brands, stores & prices? Thanks!

I’ve been eyeballing this one, but I’ve not seen it in person: [The Container Store > Java Stackable Folding Bookshelf](http://www.containerstore.com/shop/shelving/freestandingShelving?productId=10008634)

Thanks, Busymom!! Will click your link toot-sweet.

We’re not averse to a traditional bookcase that stands on the floor, but space is at a premium in those Honors suites…and that’s an understatement, lol.

^^ I saw that one in person at The Container Store. They have the folding bookshelf as well as a folding hutch. I’d go with the folding bookshelf myself because it seems more versatile, and if you use it on the desktop and want room underneath you can always fold up the bottom shelf. It seemed pretty sturdy, and I gave it a good shake.

Thanks much, Beth’s Mom!

That looks just like the one we bought at BB&B last week. It seemed to be very sturdy and was on sale for $39 and then we used a 20% off coupon!

I considered buying one from BBB sight unseen, as our locals stores don’t carry them, but the web site says assembly required and the one from the Container Store does not need assembly, so went with that.

We got the Container Store one tonight also. And met Class2012Mom while doing it!!

beth’s mom,

Was going to ask you which one she got but just figured it out - all this shelf shopping is hurting my head and I’m going with what she got.

I got the same one as Beth’s Mom (the link in Busymom64’s post).

Also picked up

and for by the kitchen sink (think our boys will use a dish towel?)

^^ I should have just followed you around the store. Those are both good purchases.

Walmart also sells a metal folding bookcase in a similar size (11-1/4"L x 25-1/8"W x 32-7/8"H) to the wood one linked above. We purchased two of the metal folding bookcases of a different size (had them shipped to the Tuscaloosa Walmart for pick-up) and I really like them. They weigh alot less than the wood bookcase, they fold smaller, come assembled, and have adjustable feet so the bookcase can be leveled. Here is a link to the bookcase: [Metal Folding 3 Shelf Wide Bookcase, 3-Tier Bookshelf, Steel Bookcase, Home Office Bookcase](http://www.walmart.com/ip/3-Tier-Wide-Folding-Bookshelf/16004935)

Thanks for that link, Randomparent. Good to know there’s another good alternative, and one with free shipping, too!

Randomparent, one of the reasons I liked the one at Container Store is that you can flip the bottom shelf up to use it as a hutch if need be. Do you know if the metal one also has that capability?

Yes, at least for the two we bought which, while they are a different size, are from the same company and have the same construction as the one I linked. However, I don’t think either of the bookcases linked here are going to provide the same vertical height to the shelf above the work nook as will be provided by a standard hutch, but there still should be enough room for a laptop opened and used in the nook. There might not be enough vertical height for something like a 19" or larger monitor.

I don’t know if this will work, but here is a link to the “hutch” we did for our son, and you can see the two metal bookcases at the ends. It looks like my son’s 19 inch monitor would just fit if the bottom shelf was folded up. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-swQ9myXJUgs/UA1xJMhBYrI/AAAAAAAAAVc/w09vRETcwpc/s640/iphone%2520pictures%2520026.jpg

That looks great. How did you do the white shelving in the middle?

They are just standard wire shelves, with the end wires supported on top of the bookcase shelves (and ziptied to the bookcases) and the middles supported by a pair of command strip hooks mounted on the wall behind the “hutch”. Worked great all year and compacts down to something that one person can carry if needed and easily fit under the bed of his summer dorm with a lot of spare room for other things under the bed.

randomparent, that is awesome!!!

randomparent, DS really likes that set up. Do you remember what size wire shelves they were? (Your boy looks just like mine from the back.)
