DGS to COB

I got accepted at UIUC's DGS. I applied as COB but obviously they rejected me there. So if I go to UIUC, I'd like to transfer from DGS to COB. Can anyone tell me how hard it would be to transfer from DGS to COB? I heard that you have to maintain a 3.60 GPA and do some leadership stuff... I really need help... I'm so worried about inter transfer thing... some say it's very hard and others say it's not so hard. I need HELP!!

I know it's easier to transfer out of business or engineering than to transfer INTO either one. That said, I know it's done both ways. Can you call the business college and ask them what the chances are of successfully transfering in? Or write them an email?

Good luck!

It could be hard for you or easy for you, depending on what kind of student you are.

What I mean is that you're going to have to push yourself to
(1) take the same classes that 1st year Business students take (i.e. ECON102, CS105, MATH234, etc., etc.) and get higher than average grades in them
and (2) do various leadership activities.

Obviously, if you were planning on doing these things anyway, then it shouldn't be hard. However, unlike some students who are already in the CoB, you really can't afford to slack off your freshman year. If you were hoping for this, then it will be hard for you.

Oh, and your GPA doesn't need to be a 3.6, necessarily, however, 3.6 is a good goal to aim for.

If Econ 102, CS 105 (not too difficult, especially if you compare it to CS 125 or ECE 190), and Math 234(Biz calc I believe? This is also probably easier than Math 221) is all there to it for transfer, getting a good GPA shouldn't be hard at all.

Illinifans, thank you for your reply. I didn't call them yet, but I did send them an email but there was no reply... Maybe I'll try calling them.

Paerra, thank you! I didn't know anything about taking the same classes that 1st year Business students take. And guess you are right about doing those things anyway.. but just more pressure than some students who are already in the COB.

Can you tell me more about the leadership activities? What are they?

sang54// Is it really not difficult to maintaing a good GPA? I'm currently doing IB and a lot of people are telling me that for an IB student, first year of college shouldn't be very hard. But I'm still very worried...

you can only transfer during ur freshmen year, that being said, see if you've gotten accepted into any other colleges, if not, go to u of i, apply to different schools again (indiana, wisconsin, ohio state maybe, uic), apply for inter-college transfer and see if you get into any of those and see if you got accepted by u of i.

I have a similar topic/question but not exactly. How do I start a new thread? Thanks

Here are the classes you have to take:

ECON102 (microecon)
ECON 103 (macroecon)
CS105 (intro to computers for non-tech majors)
SPCM101 (intro to public speaking)
MATH125 (lin. algebra)
MATH234 (bus. calc)

I wouldn't say that any of these classes are easy, in any regard. Obviously, if you've already taken Calc, then MATH234 will be easy, and obviously, if you're a good speaker already, then SPCM101 will be easy, etc., etc. However, none of these classes are easy As. If that were the case, then the class average wouldn't be a C in them, but rather, a B (which it isn't, as far as I know).

It seems that the general consensus is that CS105 and MATH125 are the hardest classes.

cs 105 is only hard if you don't have reasoning and logic skills for visual basic and SQL.

thank you for your replies... It's been very helpfuㅣ :)

here is one more question... does anybody know what would happen if I don't get into the COB? do I just graduate as a DGS?

And for those of you who are wondering why I'm not trying to email them, I did. In fact I sent about 3 emails to the DGS but they were all ignored... I have no where but here to ask these questions. Just in case :)

In case you do not get into business, economics is you're best bet. I'd also recommend you look into general engineering if interested in business. The department places general engineers very well into business sectors, and you also get to benefit from the prestige of College of Engineering.

Transferring into College of Engineering, however, would be significantly more difficult. Engineering college does have higher acceptance rate and requires lower GPA (3.2 for Engineering VS 3.5+ for Business on average), but prerequisite classes are just a lot more difficult compared to business counterparts (Business requires only Biz Calc 1, but engineering requires 3 semesters of engineering calculus, for example).

I have the same problem...so it looks like we really need to plan ahead.
if I really want to tansfer to COB (in junior year right?), do I still have time to participate in various activities or organizations during freshman/sophomore year?

Interns....

They changed the requirements now. You might that the classes are easy, but it's still kind of tough.

Btw, if you can, take ECON 102 and 103 before you come to UIUC. Gottheil is very tough. You might think you aced it, but TAs grade tough. Since you only have two tests in those classes, it's hard to bring your grade up if you fail.

Does taking AP Micro and Macro econ and getting 4,5 mean you don't have to take those econ classes to transfer to CoB or should you take them anyway?

you don't have to take them if u get ap credit.
if you end up having to take it here, Gottehil is not the only option.
there are Learning Community options you can use where classes are smaller and you'll have a different teacher. look at the bottom of the course catalogs.

bump.........................

Here's some tips about ECON 102/103 with Gottheil:

You could potentially get Gottheil for both

In Gottheil's class, he writes the textbook

Exams are basically recitation of the textbook material

Attendance enforced through pop quizzes

Gottheil leaves the teaching to the TAs, and spends his lecture time telling misleading anecdotes about trivial and overly simplistic economic exchanges

Gottheil often spends a week covering one simple concept in lecture, and then when you reach the homework, you realize that the chapter really covers about a dozen various concepts

Exams are graded extremely dubiously

Students do poorly in this class. I believe the A typically begins at 85%.
