Well, did you? I've heard this has happened in the past but it didn't happen for me-- I received need based grants and federal loans only.

Son found no merit stuff in the packet, but some others did find it, so I think the merit money has now been offerred...

Son found in his packet work study, need based grant, subsidized stafford,VU supplemental need based grant and Vandy loan. No scholarship money. But from my experience with my older son it didn't matter because when he got scholarship money, they revised his package and just took the money away from something else to equal the same total amount they were awarding him.

So financial aid info is included?

you guys got need-based financial aid in the acceptance packet?

I did not and I am confused as to why I did not receive any letter (even if I get no need-based, I got no letter telling me so)

ARE YOU SAYING IT CAME IN SAME ACCEPTANCE ENVELOPE or was it like a small envelope (separately sent) ?

Yeah, I just had lottery scholarship, Stafford loan, VU loan, and Vandy need-based grant money. I wonder how they decide who gets work study, cause I still have a ton of money left to pay on my own.

Financial Aid information -- all applicants should have in their packet a YELLOW PAMPLET entitled "Enrollment Fact Sheet"

go to page 2 . under "Financial Aid" it states that

"Intersted students that have already sumitted CSS and Fafsa: your award letter is either enclosed OR IT WILL BE MAILED TO YOU SHORTLY"

I just read and found this out

S's scholarship letter came in a separate mailing from his acceptance package, so maybe something will come for your students soon!

I called the financial aid office and they said merit scholarships were included in the financial aid statements mailed with decisions.

Agreed. My daughter received her merit scholarship with her acceptance yesterday.

Merit scholarships were enclosed in my decision yesterday. I assume that they would be included in everyone else's.

yes, MERIT scholarships may come with the decision possibly.

FINANCIAL AID - I don't think so.

Anyone verify this ^^^ ?

Ok..I went and re-checked the letter he got and his acceptance package and S received a letter notifying him of the Dean's scholarship awarded from the Dean of A & S separately but there was also notification with the acceptance package.

I have heard of a couple of students from Blair who have received admission decisions...but not everyone yet.

Would the recipients of merit scholarships care to post their stats? Thanks.

50% tuition merit scholarship

4.0 uw
9 APs by graduation with all 4/5 so far - hardest schedule possible at my school
2270 - 790V, 730M, 750W
SAT II - all 750+
1 or 2 out of 80
Lots of theater and service work

Hmm... I had similar stats but no scholarship whatsoever. I did apply to the School of Engineering. Congratulations, though. Did your grant amounts decrease because of this or not?

Re: Scholarships, I had asked the dean of admissions last year how the merit awards are selected and he indicated that, just as all qualified applicants can't be accepted in the first place, there are too many qualified acceptees for the number of scholarships--and I guess they are used in a way that meets the schools institutional plan (to attract particular students: with particular abilities, interests, geographic locations etc.). Those that did not receive scholarships are not necc. less qualified than those who did (more or less a crap shoot, just like admissions!)

Yes that makes sense. Son has a 2350, 4.6 gpa,12 APs with 4/5 scores (two more this year), and numerous awards...no merit scholarship from Vandy. There are just too many highly qualified candidates to Vandy for all of them to get awards. I notice that 5% of the incoming freshman get merit awards. It's a good number for a school as highly ranked as Vandy, but it is also a very samll number if you're one of the applicants...

I completely agree. Scholarships are not rewards for past behavior. They are incentives to attract students that you want that you might not otherwise get. It makes sense that they would use them to target specific types of students. I am sure we will never decipher that complicated calculus. For example, I heard from the Duke presentation that they may target someone who plays a specific instument because the orchestra is graduating a heavy number of oboes...sort of like recruiting a point guard. Quite frankly, I can't imagine what my daughter had that made them target her with a scholarship offer.

I'm curious to know if any ED admits received scholarships. Seeing some of the stats of those denied, I think ED was my D's best option and we're very pleased with her admission in December. However, it seems clear to me that merit awards would only be offered to "lure" in more highly qualified students and would seldom (if ever) be offered to ED admits since they already have committed to attend.

So, care to assist in disproving my theory? Any ED admits get money???
