Hi, i'm a computer science major, and i will be applying for transfer this fall. I was told that since i'm a computer science major, i shouldn't follow IGETC because it's not a requirement. Does that mean i won't have to complete the UC breadth course once i transfer?

For the spring semester before i transfer, i will only be taking one last major prereq course. Should i take more classes that will satisfy the UC GE breadth course i want to go to or i'm not required to take these classes?

You still need to complete the UC GE breadth once you transfer as it is required for UC graduation. Yes you should take classes that will satisfy the UC GE breadth.

Well, kinda. It’s true that IGETC is not a requirement for admission, nor, in most programs, is completion a factor in admission. However the reason kids in engineering / CS / science majors are told not to follow IGETC is there are many required or strongly recommended classes for their major, so that it isn’t possible to complete those courses and IGETC in 2 years at a CC.

IGETC itself was created to solve a different problem, that the breadth requirements at the UCs differ enough between campuses that you can’t take enough courses to satisfy all the requirements at all UCs in 2 years at a CC in addition to enough major-related classes for most majors. So all the UCs have agreed that if you complete IGETC they will accept that in place of their own breadth requirements.

You will be required to complete the breadth requirements at the UC you end up at. So this spring you should either take classes that look like they will be applicable towards breadth requirements no matter what UC you end up at, or see if you can complete at least 4 of the 6 IGETC areas so that you can get partial IGETC signoff.

I’m pretty sure completion of IGETC is a big factor in admission for programs that use it…If you go on assist it says the three primary factors for admission are completion of IGETC or breadth requirements, major preparation, and GPA.

Or maybe you mean that it’s not a factor as long as you finish breadth requirements?

Some UCs want IGETC for Comp Sci, some do not. The ones that don’t tend to have a lot of technical pre-reqs, so the idea is that you should focus on those instead. Assist.org should state for each school whether or not IGETC is recommended.

This is what is i need for English:
English 1A
and
English 1B or English 5

I also took English 5 (critical thinking) which also counts for English Composition. So can it be English 1A and English 5 for 2 English Composition classes and English 1B will then count for Humanities?
