Dining Plan

My first choice was the unlimited so i could eat indefinetley, but then i saw it only has $320 dollars compared to the 250 plan that brings 1040 or the 330 plan that brings 520. Are dining points important? is the unlimited to much? help please

Dining plans Meals Dining points Rate per year
Unlimited unlimited $320 ($160 per semester) $4,540

14-Plus Plan 14 per week $420 ($210 per semester) $4,280

9-Plus Plan 9 per week $700 ($350 per semester) $4,280

Kosher Plan 11 per week $460 ($230 per semester) $4,540

330 Plan 330 per year (165 per semester) $520 ($260 per semester) $4,280

250 Plan 250 per year (125 per semester) $1,040 ($520 per semester) $4,280

uhhh do you eat alot? because if you do then the unlimited plan would be a good bet but dining points are basically “dollars” that you can use on campus for various food outlets such as this one place called the george sherman union.(GSU) so if you’re always out and about and busy, then go for a plan with more dining points. the meals are only usable at the dining halls which are located in dorms such as warren towers, shelton, west campus, etc.

personally, i have the 14 meal plan and thats a little bit too much because sometimes you like to eat out on the weekends and thus have extra meals at the end of the week which do not carry over unless you’re on the 330 or 250 plan.

hope that helped a little bit!

So should freshman get the 14 meal plan as opposed to the unlimited? I do eat, but not excessively, so I think this is the best for me. Do most kids with 14 just buy breakfast with the dining and just get lunch/dinner with the meal plans each week? Just curious. Thanks :)

i dont eat alot just eat often, like 6 times a day, 3 main courses and snacks all around so i guess the unlimited is better for me

actually what you’ll find is that you will probably wake up 15-20 minutes before class and skip breakfast if you’re in a hurry. what i do is jack some fruit from the dining hall or cereal or something the night before and eat it the next morning. then i use my meals for lunch and dinner. if i dont jack some fruit or whatever the night before, then i’ll use my points in the morning to quickly grab some bread or coffee

does anyone have the number of weeks in a year of class at BU?

Do freshman generally get the unlimited plan or the 14 meal plan? BU lets you decide, so its not like most schools which require you to pay the max. It’s around ~$250 more a year, which does not seem that bad for the convenience it brings. Is any other incoming freshy or upper classman planning on getting unlimited/have gotten unlimited?

i think most freshman have unlimited just because they’re scared they wont get enough food. and if that 250 dollars isnt that much of a financial burden to you and your family, i would say go for it. your eating habits usually change alot when you come to college anyway so just go with the unlimited plan your first semester or year and then adjust accordingly the next year.

I’ve been on the 14-plus plan all year and it has worked out very well. I always sleep too late for breakfast, so two large meals per day is perfect. It also gives plenty of dining points for when you don’t want dining hall food. In fact, I would recommend against the unlimited plan solely because you will get sick of dining hall food eventually.

You can easily change your meal plan. You go to the office before a Friday and do it.

What about coffee? I know it seems like a stupid question, but even if you don’t eat breakfast, the unlimited plan lets you get coffee in the dining hall which can add up quickly outside with dining points. Is it worth the convenience for the $250 difference?

Unlimited’s advantage is you can swipe in anytime, anywhere and have a snack, etc.

yeah thats what great about it, and if i had alot of dining points i would become fat in no time

I have 250 and it’s been working out well for me. I use dining points a lot (starbucks before and after every SMG class, what upp) and I would hate to be limited by weekly allowances of the 9+/14+ because I eat spontaneously at random times in random places and would hate to have to plan ahead.

A meal is eating unlimited, like all you can eat
And points are used for individual items

Like if you use a meal then you pay one price to eat a sandwich, a salad, a banana, a water, etc (I think … Im an incoming freshman)
If you use points you would have to pay for each separate item, so you would pay x dollars for the sandwich, y dollars for the salad, z dollars for the banana, etc

So the 14 points plans would be like 2 all you can eat meals a day and then 420$ in points to be used whenever. I think that’s a bit much in my personal opinion - can you imagine yourself eating two ALL YOU CAN EAT meals a day?! That’s where the freshman 15 comes from! haha

Also, I heard that you can change ur meal plan 10 weeks into the semester, which is a lot of time. So you shouldn’t really worry about it. It’s easy and free to change your plan and I think you can change it as much as you want.

No that actually depends on where you eat…

Meal points –> dining halls in dorms (all you can eat)
Dining points –> GSU, SMG (pay per item)
Convenience points –> GSU, SMG, retail dining downstairs in Warren, u-burger, camp co. etc etc.

Which is better…meal points or dining points? With unlimited it seems like it is just easier to get what you want when you want it and the price swing isn’t very much.

You have to see when you get here. Look up the food court options, etc. You really don’t know. Example: you have friends who don’t want to eat in the dining hall. Or you have friends who do.

Unlimited gives you only a small amount of money to be spent in retail locations i.e. Starbucks, Panda Express, Jamba Juice, and other stuff at the GSU. Imho you’d get really sick of dining halls with Unlimited.

I think you should get the 250 plan. Unlimited is useless because dining food gets old really fast. I mean, my first semester I went a lot but I quickly ended up craving fast food. I think the 250 plan gives you a good balance of meals and fast food.
