"maybe those hudson folks know more than we think they do!"

Of course they do; always have!

Maybe Capt. Margaret Klein should eat EVERY meal with the mids and report to us when there has been satisfactory improvement. This isn't rocket science.

As more members of the media pick up on this, I expect heads will (should) start to roll.

^^^^Lets hope...

No excuse for the Mids to be hungry. It is a disgrace to these young men and women. I expect more out of this institution. To claim that they were caught off guard. No excuse!

Captain Klein should get combat pay for her work this week. I like the woman and I'm sorry she is leaving mid year. Moreover, she was brave enough to eat in King Hall with the mids. She has two teenagers and I doubt she would be happy if her kids had mando meals, to the tune of 15 a week, in King Hall.

What about the mids who are SIQ (sick in quarters)? How do they get food if the rotten food can't be taken out of the mess hall?

I can think of a few things Cpt Klein may deserve....not sure combat pay is one of them.
And, IMO, if the food is fit for the mids, it better be fit enough for those demanding they eat it.

And I very much doubt she would welcome mando meals for her teenagers.
Or curtail their extra-curriculars.
Or take away their tubba-tutting dolls and sing-along I-Tunes (sorry profmom...excuse the TT comment...)
Or advocate for one-way communication.
Or treat them as wayward children, incapable of being responsible or accountable on any level, especially as concerns their studies and time.
Or breathalizer them every time they walk through the door.
Better yet, slam the damm door, lock them down and lock them in.
Or barricade the refrigerator...."no access to any steerage or drydocking here."
Or reduce them to "college scholarship seeking" hounds. (opps...think that was someone else.)
And if she did, no doubt those social service folks would like to have a conversation right quick.

Enough said.
This is beyond comprehension.

Hmmm.....

maybe the mids should spend their first two years at West Point, get toughened up, then return to Annapolis for the ECA's. The food situation will be better by then as well! :)

stir the pot? me???? :)))

Well I have to say that the three meals today were satisfactory. Not the best food, but hey, there was actually left over food at the table today when everyone left. I even got to sneak a bag of chips to my room today!

But as for the USNA69 comment about not being the Gate 0 of old, are you stating that somehow things have become more "civilian" by our ordering food out? I know everyone in my company has used Gate 0 at least once already this year! Just because we are hungry does not make us any less disciplined or in lack of military bearing because we're ordering food out every once and awhile to Gate 0. "Not the Gate 0 I remember", Sir, I'm trying to decipher what you meant by this statement.

And as far as Z's comment, yeah I'm going to criticize it calling us "poor babies". Hamburger buns with gravy and one slice of pizza... Yeah, it's all true. I can't imagine things being this bad when you were a mid sir, there's just no way.

And by the way, we are standing MORE than 8 hours per weekend now of watch thanks to the new 8 duty section rotation. I just got done standing an 15 hour weekend full of CMOD, Main-O, shipmate watch, and locker watch. You would think me being the adjutant corporal for my company would give myself some leeway scheduling my own watches. Fact is, now that each duty section only has 5 people, everyone is standing a ton. Another great overhaul by the SUPE and makes the adjutant's job a nightmare!

But, human nature is to adapt! Here they teach you not to complain and just take every new change and order with a smile on your face. I'll never show any of the 4/c my beefs because it sets a bad leadership example, but let it be known, people are disgruntled, even those known most for their military bearing and discipline.

hey navy 2010, I'm with you and others on this, but what I was trying to express is that it's not her policy and she essentially is the messenger. I'm shocked that the Supe isn't out and about on the Yard these days. Maybe that's not his style though.

shogun,
Maybe Admiral Fowler interpreted "An army travels on its belly..." in the literal sense and doesn't believe that particularly applies to Navy. Worse yet, maybe he got wind of the 'country club' rumors. Tell us about the food at WP and ECs. Well, I know that some candidates don't like to sail so they choose WP over Navy. Since sailing won't be part of summer training anymore that issue is moot. Sorry about dissing 'SC...;)

usna09mom,
only have eaten once at Washington Hall and that was sunday brunch during plebe-parent weekend (i don't count the PPW banquet). The food tasted fine. I believe cadets have roughly 15 mandatory meals per week at WP as well--breakfast, lunch, and thursday night dinners. There are a lot of EC's, but how cadets find any time to do them I have no idea. I don't think you dissed 'SC, after all, when you have the greatest football team in the country (pro or college) there are always arrows to deflect!!! :).

Don't forget to watch the lunar eclipse tonight folks! If you want to see some "pretty" astronomical pictures, check out:

Hope your Mids get fed soon--tough reading all these grumpy posts!

usna09mom- thanks for clarifying!

Nope, not at all, getting a little defensive? Gate 0 was an unauthorized gate which involved going "over the wall" by going around "the wall", usually at low tide and, yes, normally involved food.

This has become far too personal and political for my tastes. I posted my final thoughts on this in the other thread.

69,

unless I'm mistaken, Gate 0 is a small pedestrian gate built behind Halsey Field House. It leads directly into town behind the row of shops running along the northern shore of the harbor. I stumbled across it by accident a few visits back. It wasn't there in my day, either. Why they built it instead of incorporating it into the new Gate 1 design is anyone's guess. I was surprised, however, not to see any security present when I went through. Go figure.

God bless all. :)

"Grrrr....Back in 1931, we ate the horses that pulled the boats down to the Severn, and we didn't complain"....We were happy just to have the chains unlocked from our ankles so we could get outside, away from the constant beatings from the 1/C's. EC's in my day consisted of putting a 60 lb pack on your back and running across the Bay Bridge......Grrrr........

Wasn't there in my day either. To get to the "real" Gate 0, one continued to the left and then went around the wall by walking on the rocks.

Please tell me about the 'Dant's letter. Did you receive it at home or was it posted somewhere online?

Thanks,
CM

Dant's letter: Posted at www.usna.com

As a retired military person, I can tell you that the Dant is truly off course, he must think the way to build leaders is to have them all dislike their current leader. That is not what has made the U.S. Military the best in the world. You don't take away traditions and they give them back to earn respect.

He should be allowing the "Firstie" to show some leadership by letting them be part of the decision discussion. This how you build leaders not telling them what to do but having them learn to lead by thinking and acting.

Hey Naptown,

I followed your link, but did not see the dant's letter. Could you give the headline for it?

Select the "Alumni" tab. There is a dropdown menu. Select "From the Academy". The page will open and there will be links to two letters, one from the 'Dant, and another from the Supe.
