hey guys. i have heard that some schools dare to disregard 9th grade gpa. i know princeton, stanford, and johns hopkins do. but are there more? i'm asking this because this might help a lot of us.

A lot do actually. I think the UCs do it, but I'm not sure.

It might help you. It would help me. I'm sure it would help many people. However, it would hurt many people as well. I believe the main reason for disregarding 9th grade is because the transition to high school is so large that colleges (and this may very well be true) believe it will hurt more students than it will help.

Most disregard it. I didn't know this either until I began applying to schools. I felt pretty cheated since 9th grade was the only year I tried. And yes, UCs do.

really? i have heard that ivies have no mercy upon ex-slackers ^^

I'm sure they'll still see your grades and it will affect you one way or another. It's just that those grades aren't considered when calculating your GPA.

am i right about princeton, stanford, and johns hopkins? just checking

Depends on the school. Most schools give you a slight break for 9th grade GPA since it's an adjustment period for most kids. Assuming you had a worse GPA in 9th grade, some schools might look at your grades and see an upward grade trend, which is good. But yeah, I've heard Ivy's are cutthroat about that.

UCs supposedly only care about 1th and 11th grade year.. i also read that you need a "true" fine art to be able to apply.. what if you are taking the fineart senior year? will that matter?

you will meet the req. if you do that

can someone give me a DEFINITE reply what schools only take 9th grade gpa?
kinda important to me

oh crap...freshman year was my best year, actually.

wait, question though: do colleges take senior year first semester grades into serious consideration? or simply sophomore and junior year grades?

so they generally disregard freshman year grades? is that only if you had trouble adjusting to high school or is that uniformly across the board? like what if you had a GOOD freshman year?

i had a great freshman year, terrible sophomore year and currently terrible junior year...but if i get straight A's from now until first semester senior year i can hang onto a 3.8 unweighted

someone please clear this up for me! i know junior year is most important to colleges, but how do the other years stack up?

hey don't worry. there are only a number of schools that ignore freshman grades. (im pretty sure)
QUESTION for all: does ignoring the freshman grades actually help or hurt? for me it helps a lot. (from 5% in class to about 2.5%)

i guess the answer to your question is relative to each person, whether he/she had a good freshman year or not.

for instance, ignoring freshman grades in my case would hurt my gpa and rank instead of help it.

This is a good idea. My grades have gotten better every single year since the 5th grade. I'm trying to peak at the right time.

bump...i'd really like someone to shed some light on my post earlier in this thread:

CARNEGIE MELLON, UC'S, PRINCETON STANFORD EVERY PUBLIC SCHOOL UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN ANN ARBOR JOHNS HOPKINS and dartmouth barely looks at freshman year ( so i'm assuming ivies don't either?)

of course ivies look at freshman but do they consider it alot?

STANFORD ONLY WANTS UR RANK FOR 10-11 GRADE ANYWAY! : ) i dunno about the others

what's with the caps...

ok but what about sophomore year and senior year first semester? how do those weigh in with freshman and junior year?

? trust me i've researched this... i had a 2.9 freshman year one semester and i currently have a 5.0 ( the highest gpa u can get in america)... A's in all ap classes

so for regular decision and for private schools 1st semester senior year count
for uc's senior yea rdoesnt count

sophomore year always counts for any school and junior year is the most important year...

if ur gpa is low.. give VALIDDDD! excuses like i will ... mines really valid but i cant disclose the info here
