Hello, I am a student who is extremely interested in Northeastern. I am a black student and was wondering what is the diversity at Northeastern and what is it like to be an URM there? I have attended a majority white and wealthy high school and am wondering what sort of atmosphere Northeastern has.

The stats I looked up had just under 50% of students being white and then a mix of other stuff. However, although the majority are white, I feel that they are down to earth and accepting of all kinds of people. Some of the international students from places like China hang together (which is typical) but otherwise, I think kids are open to mix with all sorts of people. I think you will not find the same attitude that you did with the wealthy HS kids. Kids who go there are practical and frugal - which is why they choose a school with co-ops.

I think it will be more diverse than your high school. While I don’t have any official stats, walking around campus I saw all sorts of colors, shapes, sizes, styles…I doubt you will stand out being black. Some students are very wealthy, and others are not at all, a large majority being middle class.

Boston is a city, so there’s going to be a lot of diversity, and a very progressive one at that so you again should fit right in.

Northeastern also has the African-American Institute, which may be of interest to you and provide a supportive community: <a href=“Home - African American Institute”>http://www.northeastern.edu/aai/

There is a notable amount of diversity. Especially being in the Northeast, the people are more open minded and used to diversity.
