I am thinking going to A&M, but wondering how bad diversity is on the campus. I am an Asian; just curious are there any in undergrads? How about Asian flame?

Can anybody offer some insights? Thks.

they have an all asian frat, so you shouldnt worry too much.

just google tamu gamma beta
http://www.tamugammabeta.com/

Thanks very much for the positive feedback and info.

TAMU isn’t a very diverse campus as far as major US universities are concerned. I did my undergrad at UIUC where it was ridiculously diverse and, as a white male, I sometimes felt like the minority in engineering, so it is quite a contrast here. That said, there are still plenty of, for example, Asians, especially in the engineering departments (though the other departments seem to be less diverse).

Yep, not much diversity here. I’m Asian and have seen very few Asians in any of my classes.

According to http://diversity.tamu.edu/CampusStats/StudentProfile.aspx about 4.58% of A&M undergraduates are Asian. There are lots of Asian-oriented student organizations though.

FWIW, they are trying to increase the diversity of the student body, it just takes a little while.

There aren’t that many Asian organizations…I can count them all on my fingers.

I have seen many Hispanics though. So yeah, they are trying.

I knew quite a few Asians at A&M.

@houston92 : I was wondering the same thing! I’m giving up my top choice of UC Berkeley where its about 50% asian because the price is too high and gonna come to A&M because of the nice instate cost :)

For me its a huge leap, since i was deadset on going to an almost all asian school.

But is diveristy in A&M that bad? on one website it got a D rating i think -_-
the ppl seem nice tho

The people at Texas A&M are VERY nice. They always say hello and have smiles on their faces. I visited there just last weekend for “Aggie Shadows” and everyone was just so nice. It was a very pleasant atmosphere.

What is the OOS rate? Would OOS student feel like an alien on this campus? My daughter is considering this college, (good NM aid available) but is concerned that non-Texans might be an endangered species on the A&M campus – any feedback is great.

I’m a non-Texas and have the same concerns. When I visited for an overnight trip in February, I really felt like a complete outsider.

By the way, I just have to say- an all-asian fraternity is the complete opposite of diversity. Diversity would be a presence at all or most frats/organizations of different races.

What made you feel like an “outsider”? Generally speaking, TAMU is one of the most friendliest campuses in the nation.

Just FYI, minorities have frats/organizations only for their perspective race even at schools with a high percentage of minorities. Being one of the most conservative schools in the nation, it’s hard for TAMU to attract minorities whom are generally liberal.

Oh no, I didn’t mean the people were unfriendly! Everyone was definitely super nice. But it was honestly a complete culture shock for someone from the east coast, and I was one of the only people I met there who wasn’t from TX.

The fraternity marzbarz listed is an Asian-INTEREST fraternity. Although it is predominately Asian, it is not Asian-exclusive. Its important to note that even though members of a particular organization tend to be of a certain race, it does not necessary mean that one must be of the same race to join, contrary to popular belief. Just something to keep in mind when looking at different organizations.
