Diversity weekend opportunities

Hey, you guys–I am SOOOO grateful for this site. (Thanks, CC!) I had no clue these kinds of opportunities were available for our kids until reading this section today. I am so excited for my D! Things have changed a great deal from the time I was at this stage…Thanks, again! :)

for this year class of 2011 there is a harvey mudd fly in opportunity they sent me an email about it.
look on the website.

Welsome, PGonzales!

Does anyone know when diversity weekend invites should go out? Like for anywhere???

Usually in the early fall, though some invite as early as June.

I just discovered this forum as well. For the 2011 school year, would they send you information if they want you to go or do you have to inquire about it?

Both. Colleges may have gotten your information from a variety of sources (eg. NHRP, Ventures Scholars, PSAT, signing up for information on their website) and will send you invitations. Others may post something on their website and anyone can apply. And some colleges both advertise and send invitations. If it looks like there’s a diversity weekend at a university but you haven’t heard anything from them and don’t find something on their website, do give them a call, it’s worth a try.

D2 just got an invitation to apply for Amherst’s diversity weekend today, so I guess they’re officially seniors!

@ento, would now be a good time to start checking for colleges that have a program like this?

i just got my amherst diversity weekend invite too! does anyone know if its hard to get into?

Thank you, Youdon’tsay! We’re calling schools to find out their weekends–want to get a handle on D’s fall calendar.

Yes, now would be a good time to check out possible visits, go to the last page of this thread for Keilexandra’s most recent list of schools:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/770660-fall-diversity-visit-programs-compilation.html</a></p>

I don’t really know the number of applicants vs. acceptees for the Amherst Div weekend. D1 went several years ago, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen any numbers.

Keilexandra’s posts rock & are extremely helpful for those of new to this arena.

Absolutely, she’s amazing!

has anyone heard anything about swarthmore’s diversity weekend yet?

I spoke with a representative from the school last week. Oct 2-4. Check with your school counselor–was told that announcements were mailed out to them recently and that the school prefers to get a recommendation from a school counselor. I was told that the applications for the event are to go out in August.

thanks thats really helpful!

Whatever we can do to make this process less stressful…! :)

Ah, I forgot about this but I was looking back and here’s a link for RPI [STAR Program at Rensselaer - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI)](Science, Technology, & Arts @ Rensselaer Program (STAR) | Admissions) and Lehigh [Lehigh University: Undergraduate Admissions: Events & Visiting: Diversity Achievers Program](http://www4.lehigh.edu/admissions/undergrad/visit/dap.aspx) and it was Missouri S&T [Missouri S&T, Visit Missouri S&T](Visit S&T – Future Students | Missouri S&T) which I didn’t go to and had to cancel because it was during an important date for me.

I added RPI to http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/770660-fall-diversity-visit-programs-compilation.html</a></p>

Lehigh is already listed and I’m not sure which of Missouri S&T’s programs are for minorities (with free transportation).

Bumping this because it’s that time of year when many applications for diversity weekends are due.
