I was wondering if there was any chance at Yale (or MIT) if I have three B's. I have A's other than those. Two of them are in math in my freshman year and one of them in science elective in my junior year.

I have okay (well, sort of low) SATs 2170...no school rank, fairly good extracurriculars, great essays, and recommendations.

However, are B's going to really hurt my chance?

i think you're fine as long as your grade is consistent and good. don't worry about it. as everyone says, it's not going to kill you.

sorry to use your thread. I had all A's before senior year, is it bad having 3 B's for my senior mid-year report??? I'm taking like 6 APs. A's in all science and math, B's in rest....... Does this somehow tell the colleges that I can't survive in a hard non-science class, or would they understand the course-load and the stress applying to college affecting my performance?

Bs and even a few Cs are normal parts of most people's transcripts...it's kinda hard not to get ANY in your entire high school career. Myself I have 2 Cs in freaking RELIGION class and one in AP english. My AP courses are in general A's for Junior year and Bs for senior year--my schol's grading system became much much stricter-- Bs and Cs and should not be used to just trash anyone with them..

no doctorsboy, even having a 'hook' isn't good enough. I had a great hook for MIT, including the recommendations of a National Weather Service MIC and a top researcher (from MIT) in hurricanes.

There are two things that get you into a HYPS or similar college - legacy, and luck. More luck than anything else.

It depends on the high school. The are high schools where 10% have perfect grades and others where none do. Rank is what matters. And 2100 is low for any ivy.

Hmm...well, my school doesn't have a rank. I'm not quite sure what my gpa is either, but I'm certainly not at the top...nor am I a URM or even near one

thanks everyday!! i would add that i had a 2170 if you added up all my best scores, in response to your question, now that ive been through the process, numbers really dont mean as much as everyone thinks on here, nor do how impressive your EC's are--i really think what matters the most is how you come off as a 3D person in your app and show WHY you are going to be a positive force on campus compared to the guy with the 3.95 and 2310 SAT, thats your leg-up

yeah I'd say if the admissions office reads your app, recs, transcript, scores and see mores than paper and numbers you have a good shot. its about presenting yourself in a positive light and not as a droid who only does work and science olympiads lol (nothing against science nerds I'm just kidding around).
