Do colleges look at 1st semester senior grades?

Do they?

First of all, my private high school does not do 4 scale gpa's. Only numeric.

Freshman- 83.47 %
Sophomore- 81.4%
Junior- 87.4%
Senior- 95%+(hope so)

Yes, they do. ED/EA schools look at first quarter / quintile / marking period etc senior grades, and then ask for semester and final year grades when they come. Regular admissions ask for a "midyear report" which includes first semester senior year grades.

ummm it depends....some schools look at it...but if ure ED/EA I doubt it cuz ur transcript it only shows semester grades (at least on our school's). But for RD, definitely. For ID at Rice, it depends on ur school...ask them when the grades for the fall semester senior year will be available.

They do, but it doesn't really matter. I believe they are only used for in case a significant drop in grades occur. I don't think a significant rise all of a sudden will help you much. I think someone on these boards called Cornell last year and they said they don't really look at them.

Thanks for the replies. What do you think my chances are at NYU or Columbia, or others?

Grades- mentioned
SAT- 2230
ACT- 34 Composite

Alot of EC's, and 200 hrs comm. service.

They definitely do. If you show great improvement then they will see that. For rolling admissions, if you get deferred a great senior year could make it an acceptance, etc.

21 percent.

If you increase community service hours to 235, your chances will go up to 24%, j/k. Seriously, you can't determine anything from hours of community service listed in a vacuum with no additional context.

I'll just say that I know from personal experience that they don't really care. Your overall GPA matters a lot more (especially sophomore/junior year) than the CC coveted "upward trend."

Judging purely from what you have given us so far (you could have some fantastic ECs or essays) I would say very slim chance at Columbia and NYU is probably a reach too, seeing as how you have a B average. Your SATs are good but I have found that colleges care a lot more about GPA than SATs (boy, you really do learn a lot about the admissions process AFTER it's over hmm?). Anyway, I don't want to discourage you from applying, and there is always a chance that you might get in. I'm just trying to give you my honest opinion. Good luck.

Doesn't this depend on the school as well as when ure first semester ends?

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I really want to go to NYU or columbia, because of its location (especially NYU). The reason for the low grades these past years was because of family problems, one after the other. If I mention that, would the colleges overlook the grades a bit, and focus on the other components?
