***First Generation
Please comment

they are correct

sorry

no you’re not getting in. come to northwestern dude.

nothing pops, but first gen can be a hook.

are you an asian in californian or a similar orm in a ors?

First generation is a tip factor, not a hook. It’s strongest when accompanied by URM status, low income and being from an inner city.

You do have a shot. While people will shoot you down for no stand out ECs, many can use what they have creatively in the application.

How are you a national merit scholar if you’re only a junior?

I think you have a fair shot at Harvard.

Perhaps they feel obliged to lend them a hand after the discrimination/slavery. But yes, it does suck being Asian for college admissions.

Hmom can you explain what the difference is between hook and tip factor? I’m a little confused between the difference between the two terms.

Chances are slim, but if you want to apply, go for it.

He’s a National Achievement Scholar. I think that means he’s African American, in which case I’d say it’s time to get used to Boston. Assuming this isn’t a phony post.

But the thing is, bovertine, I think NM results only come out by the time you’re a senior, and he said that he’s a junior. Thoughts?

^^^^That’s why I added the part about this maybe being a ■■■■■.

Look, I’m no admissions expert, so take my advice with a grain of salt. My sister’s currently a sophomore at Harvard, and let me tell you, there was nothing that fantabulous about her ec’s. She got a 2210 on the SAT’s, 3’s and 4’s on the APs she took (she did take all that our school offered, though), and she never played a sport, instrument, or anything. Miracle? Maybe…probably. But what I’m trying to say is not to get yourself bogged down by what you think they want. Give it a shot! You never know what’ll happen. Just for fairness, though, I would invest plenty of time looking into lower reach schools that’d make you happy to go to. Good luck!

I would also suggest only asking about your chances if you feel that the advice you get can get you to improve your shot. Otherwise you’ll probably get unduly discouraged, optimistic, or confused.
