I am currently a senior and I just finished applying to UNC Chapel Hill early action. I am very anxious to see my acceptance decision which is to be given out on January 30th. Does it look like I have a decent chance in getting in? I want to major in Biomedical Engineering

Thank You and please be honest!

You really need like a 29 ACT or better. Your grades are great and the breadth of your ECs look good for instate.

I think you have a chance as it stands but hope for higher ACTs to lock you in. If you’re interested in BME, are you also applying to NCState? They have a much more comprehensive engineering program than UNC.

Best of luck.

Thanks JohnBlack!

I did apply to NC State, but UNC is my dream school. I have always wanted to attend UNC. NC State is my backup if I do not get in. I really hope I get a 29+ on the ACT now.

Also my sister attended UNC. Does that increase my chances?

Slightly. Don’t hope for much. UNC’s admissions office said that in-state legacies aren’t a big factor. Research shows that peripheral legacies (like a sister, uncle, cousin etc.) do help in admissions although the impact isn’t nearly as strong as a primary legacy (i.e. parent that attended undergrad at that institution)

I don’t know what JohnBlack is talking about…you are almost definitely going to get in, especially if your essays were good. They place a huge emphasis on essays in admissions. And don’t worry too much about test scores. One of my friends is a morehead and still refuses to tell people what she got on her SAT and took it like 6 times. Standardized test scores are absolutely NOT anything that will destroy your application.

Sit back and enjoy your senior year! I would definitely be shocked if you didn’t get in (although there are some random highly qualified people who don’t…but that’s much rarer in-state). And coming from a current freshman, UNC really is as amazing as everybody says. :)

Great grades, class rank, and leadership. Your ACT is a little on the lower side but I’d still be optimistic; it’s likely that it went up a point or 2 when you retook it. I’d say overall good chance.
Good luck!

Chance back?

Thanks you guys! I’m still going to try and increase my ACT score. Sarah I’ll chance you back ;).
