Do I have any hope for UCR?

My Sophmore Year and Junior year combined I have a 3.2 weighted GPA and 2.95 unweighted gpa. Also I have a 1600 SAT score and was in 3 clubs but no sports. If it helps I am African-American and have siblings that attended UCR. Also I am planning on retaking Pre Calculus second semester because I got a D last year and so on my application I am going to leave that semester as in progress because that is really hurting my GPA. I am hoping I can at least get weightlisted and maybe get in. Pleast help. Thank you.

You may be able to take advantage of the ELC program. See <a href=“Graduate, Undergraduate and Equity Affairs | UCOP”>Graduate, Undergraduate and Equity Affairs | UCOP; Not sure if the 3.0 they refer to is weighted or not, check with your counselor.

The other pathway that guarantees you admission to a UC campus is statewide eligibility. They have a calculator at http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/california-residents/admissions-index/</a>

Both pathways say “if space is available” but from what I’ve heard they always have space at least at Merced and often at Riverside.

What is your UC GPA? See link to calculate: <a href=“GPA Calculator for the University of California – RogerHub”>http://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/</a></p>

For the ELC program, you need to be in the top 9% of your HS class or in the top 9% of the state. The default campus has been UC Merced for the last few years.

Your SAT is within range but you are below the 25 percentile in GPA. UC’s are very GPA focused. UC’s banned affirmative action so being a URM will not help. UC’s also do not consider legacies either.
Depending upon your major, you might have a very slim chance. Here is a link to the common data set for UCR. Only 0.2% admits last year had your unweighted GPA.
<a href=“Institutional Research |”>Institutional Research |;

UC Merced shows 1% admits that had your unweighted GPA. You should look to your local Cal State for a better chance at a 4 year University. You should consider still applying, but you need to have some good backups.

Good Luck.

So does UCR mainly look at your unweighted GPA? Because I was hoping that my 3.2 weighted GPA would be of some help but I don’t know.

The common data sets for all Universities will publish the unweighted GPA (out of 4.0). The Stats posted on most of the UC websites is the UC GPA (weighted). Both GPA’s are looked at so the UCR Average GPA is 3.77 (UC GPA). You are still below the 25th percentile either way. You do have a chance for acceptance depending upon your major. A highly competitive major would require an above average GPA and SAT while a non-competitive major is a possiblity with lower Stats. Are you ELC eligible?? If so, you will get into either UCR or UCM, but default UCM has been the campus in the past few years.

To be brutally honest, you don’t have much of a chance to make it into UCR as a freshman with those stats. If you are local to So Cal - Riverside, Fullerton, CPP and even Long Beach may be viable options. Apply really broadly.

Well if I won’t be able to get in UCR, what are my chances in getting into Cal Poly Pomona?

What major are you interested in? Are you in the immediate service area for CPP? Also calculate your Eligiblity index: (CSU GPA x800) + (SAT Math + SAT CR) and post.

Here is the common dataset for CPP: http://www.csupomona.edu/~irar/CommonDataSet/CommonDataSetDocs/cds2013.pdf</a></p>

Information regarding impacted programs and additional requirements:
http://www.csupomona.edu/~admissions/advising/impacted-majors.shtml?nav=undergrad</a></p>

You have other Cal State options such as Monterey Bay, Channel Islands, LA, San Marcos, San Bernadino etc… besides CPP.

Eligibility Index is 3716 and I live about 30 minutes from the Cal Poly Pomona campus if that is what you are asking. As for major I am thinking of applying under Computer Science. How are my Chances with this for CPP?

Here is a link to a list of the service area Cal States.

http://www.calstate.edu/sas/documents/CSULocalAdmission-ServiceAreas.pdf</a></p>

You get priority at the Cal State that is in your immediate service area which is probably not CPP. Your EI is right on the borderline especially for CS, so I would say you have a 50/50 chance. For CSULB, you need an EI of 3900 and for SDSU an EI of around 4100. You need to consider other options such as CSU Fullerton and San Bernadino. If you are willing to go farther, San Marcos and Monterey Bay are not impacted campuses, so an acceptance will be much easier.

With a 3716 EI, I agree with Gumbymom - probably 50/50 in CS at Cal Poly Pomona. Fortunately, Pomona allows you to select an alternate major. Apply as a CS major but, fall back to a less competitive major like CIS in the Biz department. It is not so far from CS that you’ll be throwing away units when/if you change. With a less competitive alternate, you are almost sure to make it into CPP.
Good Luck

So are you saying that I can apply with CIS and then switch to CS once I get in?

Here is the information regarding changing your major at CPP. It doesn’t look too difficult but you have to wait until the following fall (1 year) before you change due to the GPA requirements.

http://www.csupomona.edu/~academic/programs/documents/ChangeMajorReqHandout-072511.pdf</a></p>

Some schools are not problem with change of majors and some schools can be difficult especially for impacted majors such as CS. You need to do some research on each school you are applying.
My younger son is at SDSU as a CS major. He is placed in a pre-major for the first 2 years and must maintain a 2.0 GPA before he is allowed to take upper division CS classes.

Okay Thank You so much. I’m going to start submitting my applications tommorow

I’d suggest you apply CS and list CIS as an alternate. Decide after they respond. Also - please apply elsewhere. (Maybe Northridge and Channel Islands in So Cal) You don’t want to get shut out.

I am definitely applying to other schools but I am feeling very confident about Cal Poly as I just realized that my school is within the service area.
