Do I need to bring a printer?

Do most people bring their own printers or just use Princeton's? Are printers easy to acces and do you have to pay per sheet or are they free?

I heard that they were free

printers are very easy to access, and they're free.

I didn't have one the first two years, and it was no problem at all. I finally decided to bring one last year, and from experience, here are the only reasons you might want one:

(1) You're down to the wire on Dean's Date and waiting in line will make you miss your deadline.

(2) You do a lot of work with graphs, or graphics, and want color -- retooling Excel graphs to be readable in black & white is annoying.

(3) You want to be able to print small things (like problem sets) on demand -- walking all the way to the printer for just one sheet of paper is annoying.

(4) You're exceptionally lazy, and walking anywhere is annoying.

I still use Princeton's printers for lecture notes and long readings, though, and I use the OIT New Media Lab's services (not free, but useful) for printing transparencies and other complicated stuff.

Incidentally, if the printer weren't just sitting at home unused, I wouldn't have brought one. Given the availability and ease of use of Princeton's printers, I would not have bought a new one.

wait and see where you're housed to see how far the nearest printer is. I lived in feinberg next year, and it probably took less time to walk to the cluster in 1937 and print out papers on a really fast professional laser printer than it would have if i had to sit in my room and wait for my cheap deskjet to print the paper. On the other hand, if the cluster is far, it would be worth bringing the printer just for times when its raining or something

i bought a 50 buck hp printer at the u store last year and it was worth it. very convinient.

zante, do you have your powerboook yet? My ship date keeps getting pushed back. 7-12 then 7-15, now 7-20. This happen for you too?

Yes-- same thing. Mine's 7/20 now too.

Doesn't it just suck! I really want my computer so I can start playing with it and get really familiar with it. Not something I want to be doing in the first few weeks of school!

I'm sure we'll get it by August? Hopefully? >.<
Did you find out your dorm info?

yeah, 131 1938 hall. Wilson. Good for me b/c of engineering.

Ah, you're right, you've got the best possible location for a freshman engineer... Just a straight walk down the path to science/math. No hills. :-)

How many pages do people print out? Can you print out a 100+ page document?

you can print out as much as you want. I think that i ended up printing ~1000 pgs per semester (a lot of my classes had required online readings, and a bunch had powerpoints) it's just not very nice to print out that 100+ page document during finals period, other than that you should be good

zantedeschia, enjeneer: same thing with the powerbook ship date. I wonder what's taking so long? I really want to start moving files and stuff over, and I don't want to be rushed before school starts :-/

I don't know, maybe Apple is experiencing especially high demand? Or are they just taking the time to add on all that software? =/ Apple was never that fast with shipping, I think my ipod took a month to come.

how long ago did you guys order yours? i ordered mine like late last wk

I ordered mine like two weeks ago.

same, placed on 7/5 w/ SCI, 7/8 w/ apple acc. to website.

i ordered that thinkpad tablet, from the facebook deal. she said it would take 3 weeks, cuz they need to build em. i would think the SCI ones should be stocked, though.
