Hello I was wondering if I would qualify for heop at cornell,

Combined income : 15,000 for a family of 4

Test Scores: 650 math 1c, 700 chem
28 Act

I am a NYS resident. Do you think I would qualify based on my stats and income level. Also, how much of an impact does heop have on ones chances. Thanks!

for the program it states that one can be asian, african, or hispanic american coupled with low socioeconomic status and low achievement. I know that my stats are low for cornell standards and my gpa is a 92 uw. But my family income is very low and I live in nys.

a 1350 isnt dangerosuly low for cornell. its below average but your comfortably above the 25% percentile; maybe around the 30-40th, nor is your 92 uw bad. but the income is low and you do live in nys as you said, so maybe apply

btw I am an Asian American. However, on their site, it specifically states that anyone below a certain income range (in my case family of 4), and mediocre academics but a chance to succeed will qualify for heop. Does this really help? Im desperate for advice

this isn't affirmative action. aa is qualified minorities who are given the opportunities that they wouldn't get because of racism. frankly, i think having mediocre grades and getting into a school like cornell, isn't fair to the other people who achieved.

Flippy thanks for your comment. However, I realized that this is a competitive program to get into. Do you guys think that I may have a shot of getting this?

abike11: I totally agree with your post. However are my stats really that bad even if I didnt qualify? My gpa is a 92 and I have a C on my transcript. HOwever, all my teachers see my true potential and have expounded upon that in my recommendations.

ur stats aren't bad at all. i don't know what heop is looking for. check the boxes anyway on the application. if u write about ur situatiron in your app they will take it into consideration

Well they want people who are both academically and economically challenged. Apparently they want people who scored in between 1000-1250 range (24-28), and show academic potential. Seeing my other posts, etc, I really hope that I qualfiy for this program as I have overcome true adversity.

abike11, HEOP is geared toward students who were so poor that they had to work nearly full time throughout high school, were probably being evicted from apartments on a regular basis, were on the verge of homelessness or actually were during certain periods, etc. The income bracket for HEOP is extremely low, so low as to act as a net for students who weren't just poor but were so poor that it affected every facet of their lives. abike11, the sooner you realize that you haven't seen or experienced life the way a) minorities do or b) the extremely poor do, the sooner you will get off your soapbox against programs that help the poor and underrepresented.

bongoboy: I did get a job during the summer to pay for my parents hospital bills and home finances. However, this didnt affect my grades. However, It did affect my act scores as I had no time to study for them and my parents were not able to provide me with expensive tutors etc. Do you think I will get into this program? I will contact the heop people and let them know of my situation,

I don't know iwannatopcollege. There's an income bracket and a grade bracket. If you don't meet those specific requirements, I would contact them and see what you can do. I didn't meet the income requirement by a few thousand and I was nowhere near the academic requirement, so I didn't check the box. If you're interested, contact them and see what you can do.
