The UC’s and CSU’s acceptances are provisional meaning that you need to pass all a-g courses Senior year with a C- or higher (UC’s do not use +/-). The UC’s tend to be less forgiving than the Cal states. That said, some schools are flexible and willing to work with an applicant/student and offer some options to maintain their acceptance if they are notified early in the admission process.

Is this a semester grade and does it show up on your transcript?

If it is on your transcript, you are required to update the UC’s by logging back into your application:

**If there are changes to your academic record: If you add or drop a course, fail to earn a C or better in a course or enroll in a new college after you submit your application, log back in and update your information online. If you receive an offer of admission, be sure to confirm with the campus admission office that they are aware of the deficient grade or schedule changes.

Keep in mind: We cannot guarantee that a campus can go back to review an application after correspondence has been received. Make sure to save a copy of your correspondence just in case.**

For the CSU’s, you will need to contact each campus individually so see what options are available. It is always better to deal with the problem sooner than later.

Schools do not like surprises when they get your final transcript in July. This would lead to a definite rescinding of your acceptance.

Best of luck.

Thank you! I have finished all of my A-G courses and passed. I just have to pass AP Lit and AP Gov (which I am). AP Comp Sci A at our school is merely an elective course (i already finished my elective credits) also, idk if they apply to other schools but at our school, a D is technically a passing grade.

so idk how my grade is going to be interpreted

Some of the Cal States will let the D ride (so to speak) if you completed all your a-g course requirements, but some will not and specifically state that any grade below a C- even in a non a-g course or elective could result in your admission be rescinded. It is up to each individual campus on how they will consider your grade.

Like I stated above, the UC’s can be pretty hard nosed about the D grade. Your GPA is already well below average for all the UC’s, so the D is definitely going to make your admissions tough.

From the SDSU website as an example:
** If you are admitted, courses you listed on your application as in progress or planned must be completed with grades of C- or higher by the end of the spring 2020 term. You must also maintain your reported overall grade point average. If you earn a grade of D or F during your senior year, or if your grade point average drops below what was reported on your application, or if you misreported a required course, any offer of admission may be withdrawn.**

UCI provisional admission contract:

Maintain at least a weighted 3.0 senior year GPA in UC-approved courses.
Complete your senior year program with the same high standards you have demonstrated thus far. The following situations may result in the withdrawal of your admission offer:
a) any D or F grades in your senior year a-g courses,
b) taking courses that are less rigorous than reported on your application,
c) not maintaining UC Eligibility.

Rule of thumb for any school as a Freshman applicant: No D’s, No F’s and No Felonies.

Thank you so much! I’m just extremely stressed and I feel like my Comp Sci teacher is constantly berating me even though I ask them for help. My teacher can be really condescending and sometimes say stuff like “you should know this already” or like “I’m disappointed” which makes everything so stressful. But, I digress. I have a question about the colleges that applied for and the likelihood of acceptance.

I applied to
UCI (i’m going to get rejected)
CSULB - legacy student (dad)
CSUF - legacy student (mom)
CPP
CSUN
CSULA

I already got accepted into community college so at least I have a backup plan.

The Cal states do not consider legacy in their admission decisions, so no extra bump there.

Are you within the local service area for any of the CSU’s?

I live in the OC area and my high school is a magnet school to CSUF. I’m local to CSULB and UCI.

UCI does not consider local priority.

If you are local to CSULB and CSUF, then your counselor should have a good relationship with admissions??? You might want to ask your counselor to contact the schools for you and see how much of an impact the D grade will have on your admission.

UCI stats for 2019 Freshman admits:
Average UC capped weighted GPA- UCI: 4.13
25th-75th percentile GPA range: 4.00-4.25
25th-75th percentile for SAT: 1250-1510

CSU’s admit by eligibility index and major.
EI= (CSU GPA capped weighted x 800) + (SAT Math + EBRW)

Your EI calculates out to (3.2 x 800) + (1220)= 3780

CSULB average EI 2019 was 3930. If you are local, then you get priority. Applicants who are considered ‘local’ based on their high school of graduation or military status who meet the CSULB minimum eligibility requirements but are not admissible to the major will be offered admission as an ‘undeclared’ student.

CSUF average EI 2019 was 4071. Again if you are local, then you get priority.

CPP average EI 2019 was 4289.

CSUN average EI 2019 was 3949. Applicants outside the local service area require an EI 3800 minimum.

Thank you so much. Also, there was this phenomenon that happened at our school last year that still mind boggles to this date.

We had a male Asian student that applied to UCI and got accepted. (Not an international student)

His major was Biology.

His stats were:

3.2 GPA
1200 SAT

He took a few AP classes and from my understanding, he had minimal extracurriculars. (Soccer and a few clubs)

NOTE: He took AP Biology for a few weeks and then dropped out.

I always thought he had really good essays or something like that.

UC’s consider all aspects of the application. Yes, there are always some outliers or exceptions so you never know. All you can do is give it your best shot but the D will be an issue especially for UCI. They have and will rescind applicants that do not meet the provisional admission contract.

Thank you for your time. Also, I apologize for asking so many questions. Thank you.

No problem, that is what I am here for to answer questions.

If he had his worst grades in 9th grade, then his UC-recalculated GPA could have been significantly higher.
