Do I still have a shot...?

Hello, I am a junior in highschool who was hoping to apply next year to a bunch of UCs, San Diego being one of them. However, I just received my SAT scores today and am a little worried that they will not cut it…
570 reading and writing, 720 math…

I currently have a total gpa of 4.36 (weighted, i’m not sure about my unweighted at the moment), and as for extracurriculars, I am in NHS, CSF, and a Science and Engineering club, which I am hoping to be an officer of next year.

I also took 2 APs last year, 1 this year, and planning to take 3 next year, took a linux class last summer at a community college, and am taking chemistry at the same place this summer.

I am also planning on computer science or physics as a major.

Do I still have a shot, if I write a good essay, despite that I didn’t achieve what I had hoped for my SAT? I’m really quite worried… =/

Thanks.

Keep retaking the SATs if you're not satisfied, though I think you did fine. Your GPA and extra-curriculars will help you balance out your SAT score, though it doesn't need much help.

You may have trouble getting into CS, so keep a strong, non-impacted major as your backup when applying.

STOP BEING SO CRAZY!!!! why is everyone on this forum like this???? your SAT scores are way higher than mine and your GPA is higher than mine too...they don't care too much about your essay though...plenty of people have way lower GPAs and still get into this school and GPA is the most important...

but seriously, this is the only place in the world where getting 700+ is average on SAT.....500 is like average, 700 is amazing...dont worry about your 570, thats higher than anything i got...

i mean, if you're really that worried take it again...it would suck for you if you didn't get in because of that 570 ha ha ha

i had a 4.09 GPA, 510, 560, 520 on SATs, 27 on ACT,
580 and 560 on SAT II
ELC, low-income, disadvantaged environment
no ECs

and UCSD loves me, they even called me last october, congratulating me on my scholastic achievements and telling me to apply there 0=]

I got accepted, people with worse stats than me got accepted...stop worrying so much, we can't predict their decisions anyway.

I dont mean to be rude, but I am so tired of these people with good stats asking if they have a "chance" everyone has a chance..some just smaller than others...

please just do your best and stop worrying, you'll get accepted to a college that wants you, and if UCSD doesnt, eff them...you could just do well somewhere else.

don't worry, but try to get that sat up. i know some person with like a 1560 that got into ucsd. so you never know. but to be on the safe side, you should get your SAT up.

it doens't matter what people tell you. it doest matter if we would accept/reject you. we arent the adcom. adcoms are unpredictable. people with stellar scores (2100+) got denied, while people with not so stellar scores (-oo ,1500) were offered admissions. ucsd has an "objective" policy for admissions. based on this years acceptances, that can be argued. just try your best. try to improve. if you do - kudos. if you do - kudos.

but if you're still worried - try ACTs. most people scores improve.

From my experience, I think colleges usually like a higher math than a higher reading/writing. Personally, I think you could get into San Diego and every other UC outside of Cal and UCLA for sure. The last two tend to reject a lot of great people (not me, but some of my friends) and let in some not-so-great people (again, not me but some of my friends).

I had almost your exact stats. I took the SAT 2 more times and improved my reading and writing slightly. I took the ACT(definitely study a little for the science part) and got a 32 which put me into a better tier of schools. I got into all UC's except for UCLA and also got in some great privates. Work really hard on your essays because I believe they can make a difference, especially if you are coming from a competative high school. I know people who were rejected from most UC's with great stats and the only thing that could have been lacking were their essays.

"got in some great privates"

ha ha ha ha

hobo has a dirty little mind. lol

Please look at this rubric and take it seriously http://admissions.ucsd.edu/dev3/info/comreview.html.

Verum: You have a great chance. You should retake your sat1s to get an even higher score to ensure your admissions and study for those sat2s since they are 2/3 as important as your sat1 score. The formula for points would be 0.8(sat1+sat2+sat2). I would highly recommend you get 300+ hrs of community service at more than one place, show some leadership somewhere, and show some nice awards on your application. Also, personal hardships (like a family death) can give you up to 500 pts (that's a lot!).

hoboknifefight:
Verum has every right to be scared. I would like to correct you a little (please don't hurt me). As you can see in the rubric for UCSD admissions, it is very objective. Having a low income and being a first generation college student gives you a fat 600 point lead. Also, ELC gives you another 300 point lead. I personally got 7214/7426 towards admissions this year. My stats are: 3.9gpa, 1750 sat1, 690 math2c, 690 bio. If I had any of those three you had, I would've gotten in.

vii:
Adcomes ARE unpredictable, but UCSD's adcoms are one of the easiest to predict. I have multiple friends that got into UCSD strictly through academics (2300 sat and 4.4 gpa). Using the formula, they already pass the cutoff of 7426, and that is not disputable (that's why there are a lot of studious students at UCSD =P). UCSD admissions officers will throw your application in the "in" pile once you've passed 7426 points as they've said to my friend (they wouldn't tell him his score).

Lastly, make sure you pick a non-impacted alternate major to ensure your acceptance. Comp Sci is impacted so you are basically going to need more than 7426 points to get in (the cutoff might be 7800). Good luck Verum. You have what it takes.

All I'm saying is you should do as well as possible, and if you cant get in with your stats, then oh well, go somewhere else. If you can do better on your SATs then do it...though after I took the SAT, i told myself i would never take them again because i hated it so much.
and like vii, i recommend the ACT...it is easier....and fun =]

2006 grad - who doesnt have a dirty mind?! =/

lol ..... .lol

wow hobo how did u get accepted lol j/k

Well of course you still have a shot...I mean 1860 SAT, you can easily get that up. Since your math is fine, just work on your Crit/W a little bit more. Convert those 570's into like low 600's. That just a few more questions answered correctly which will boost your score by almost 100.

Don't worry about the SAT, I'm sure you can do better.

if aren't red flagged as an applicant, meaning you have lower than a 3.3gpa or a 1300 on the sat, i'd say you'll have a good of a chance as anyone else that applies to ucsd that has plus or minus lower or higher scores than you.

if this will give you any piece of mind at all, compare yourself to me.

3.74gpa weighted
1620 sat's
800 us history sat ii
770 chemistry sat ii

ONLY one COLLEGE approved class freshmen year.. haha, it was ceramics. i wasn't into school back then.
no honor classes soph year.
3 ap courses jr year.
5 ap snr year.
8 cc classes, all A's.

i absolutely HATED HATED HATED the sat reasoning test. i tried SO hard my first time, you have absolutely no idea, that i just said 'screw it' when i saw my absurd score of a 1620. then october senior year i thought i could take it again because maybe i had just gotten naturally smarter some how. and guess what? got a 1580, i wasn't too happy. story of my life. the test just wasn't made for me. my advice is if you're like me and TRUELY already tried your best to get a good score once and maxed out your efforts, then it's a waste of time to keep try again in vain. concentrate on other things like taking a bunch of classes at cc's or take a bunch of ap's rather than studying a bazillion hours like me for the sat reasoning. don't stress out about your sat score, it doesn't help you one bit.

changbj88 - I got accepted because they gave me 15,000 points for being sexy.

how can you find out your score?

Call the admissions office and speak to a representative.

do they NOT want you to do that? i'm just curious, like it's for no real reason - so will they be upset if i do that?

They will be upset if you call for your points after you got accepted. This is mostly because they (this is a rumor) throw your application into the "accepted" pile right when you pass the cutoff. As for those who got rejected, they are willing to tell you the points. UCSD has a very dedicated admissions department.
