Do parents have the same pin number as student for signing FAFSA? Thanks.

No, the student applies for their own pin and the parents apply for their own pin. 1 pin per set of parents.

Student needs a PIN.

AND

ONE parent needs a PIN.

Thanks.
How do I apply? Can I have the pin immediately? and after hit “submit”, can colleges receive FAFSA immediately?
I’ll mail out my tax return in next week, should I check “will file” or “have filed”? my numbers are accurate.

Just Google FAFSA PIN and you will easily find the site to create your PIN and your child can create theirs as well. You just need birthdate and SS#. Yes - you can use it immediately to sign the FAFSA. For simplicity - my sons and I all use the same PIN - which you can do - as we all have different birthdates and SS#s, of course.

On the FAFSA and the will file/have filed issue - see a thread I created yesterday on this issue. You are supposed to use the new IRS data retrieval tool to automatically fill the FAFSA. If you are mailing your tax return - it could take a few weeks for this to be available. So - you have to click “will file” and submit the FAFSA. In April - go back int FAFSA to do a correction - then use “have filed” and use the IRS data retrieval tool to populate the FAFSA directly from the IRS. You may also want to check with the college(s) and see if this is what they want you to do OR if they will accept “have filed” and you entering the information manually and NOT using the IRS tool.

Thanks rockvillemom, I got my pin, but it said it takes 1-3 days for verification. I need to call them and colleges tomorrow.
if deadline is 2/1, that means 2/1, 11:59pm, EST?

Oh, my. I thought I was on top of things by applying for ds’s PIN in November. Didn’t realize that parents HAD to have one, too, and that it would take a few days to get! So grateful for these posts - ds’s earliest deadline is upon us - 2/5!

I just got my younger son’s PIN in the fall and it seems like it was confirmed almost immediately - but perhaps that’s because it was not a busy time of year for this.

OK - just got my parent PIN, and the last page of the process stated the PIN can be used immediately to file the FAFSA, but will have to be verified before I can use it to access my personal information of Fed. Student Aid websites. Hmmmm, wonder what that means? Why would I need to see the information I provided - stuff like my address, email address, etc?

thanks all.
update… I called both FAFSA and colleges.
You can sign FAFSA with the pin immediately without verification. It takes 3-5 days to process FAFSA. By that time your pin is verified. Colleges count the date you submit FAFSA, even though they will receive it 3-5 days after that.
Finally I can breath, HS senior year likes an emotional roller coaster.
