what music, if any, do you listen to?
I prefer not to. I usually concentrate more with the music rather than the material I'm studying. But I, rarely, listen to slow, soft music (like love story stuff)...I find that I can't concentrate much though.

I listen to rap while separating homogeneous differential equations. I think it's a good combination.

I listen to everything while studying, music wise that is. Ironically enough, I concentrate better while listening to music versus not, but I think that it is because if I am not listening to music I am more tempted to get up and do something else rather than studying. I guess I'm just an acception because I know that most of my friends can't listen to music while studying.

I have become a great multitasker. I can now do homework, listen to music and talk on the phone at the same time. I don't recommend it though, I think my grades have dropped :(.

I tune out everything when I'm working dilligently on something-- people think I'm ignoring them on purpose-- not trying to at least... well, maybe ;)

When I'm studying I prefer it to be quiet, but if I'm just grinding out homework problems I usually listen to some death metal.

It depends... when I'm writing essays, then no, I can't listen to music, but when I'm doing any other type of homework, especially stupid busy work, I always listen to really loud rock music. When I'm actually studying for a test, though, I listen to Josh Groban :)

usually i dont listen to music when i'm working unless its, as raychul said, busy work. although at times, putting on the classical channel helps me for some reason. you know the whole "classical music helps the brain function/focus/etc etc" well thats where i got the idea. i dont even listen to it but it makes me focus for some reason. although, it could be a mental thing

Movie Soundtracks

oo and i forgot beach boys while doing reading journals and notes, and before i do all my homework, i listen to songs that inspire me...the rocky theme song =D, we are the champions, fighter, watch me shine (hahaha ironic), supergirl, etc etc

Well, I can't concentrate period, so music or no music, my performance is still the same. :)

Right now I'm listening to some new Three Days Grace, old school RHCP, and some awesome Weezer stuff I just dug out of the vault. Makes me happy.

i've found mogwai to be really good for concentrating stuff. or muse if you turn it up fairly loud - it blocks out any potentially distracting sounds.

Level 1: Just busy work: Incubus or Radiohead
Level 2: Semi-busy Semi-thought provoking work: U2 or REM
Level 3: Thought provoking work: Moby or Movie Soundtracks
Level 4: Serious work like essays or last minute studying: Enya or no music

for me, it depends on the subject. anything requiring reading/ writing i listen to just classical or none b/c if i listen to music with lyrics, i get distracted and start singing :). anything with memorization/math I listen to pretty much everything.

copying nyjunior's Level idea:

Level 1: busy work of the most extreme kind (like plugging in equations sort of thing)- Footloose, High School Musical, All Shook Up-Something I can sing all the songs to mwuahha

Level 2: semi busy work-a little bit thought-provoking-Indie Bands...Somehow Indie Bands that I don't know all the words to yet (My friend burned a cd with 42 cds on it, and my ipod's on shuffle) so basically I can nod my head

Level 3: homework to thing about-oddly nothing. I guess I'm used to doing it in the morning.

Level 4: essays/projects-I might have classical music, Norah Jones-y type music

I have '90s grunge and other alternative rock usually playing, no matter how serious the situation is.

Electronic ( Infected mushroom, van dyke, van buuren, blank and jones, the egg,, neuroactive, bajo fondo tango club, gotan project etc), metal ( helloween, iced earth, demons and wizards) and some random punk ( bad religion)

Yeah, I find mogwai good to listen to as well.Sigur Ros is a really good band to listen to for relaxing and reading.

I tried listening to metal while doing a ton of math hw once. I bombed it...I think my preformace was so bad that the teacher couldn't think of a grade to asign it lol.
So I tried classical stuff. It helped me concentrate alot. Just not on my hw.
I don't think music while studying is really for me...

it vaires. usually it's in the punk rock/ska/metalcore spectrum though...if I borrow the levels from earlier its:

Level 1: Just busy work: Pop Rock!!! (read mest, green day, rancid)
Level 2: Semi-busy Semi-thought provoking work: ska-ish (op. ivy, big d and the kids table, reggie and the full effect etc.)
Level 3: Thought provoking work: Papa Roach, Anti-Flag, more Op. Ivy etc.
Level 4: Serious work like essays or last minute studying: Killswitch Engage, Trivium etc.

yeah...it's a bit odd...but that's the stuff I concentrate best to so I don't really question it

My Play list is pretty random.
Borrowing the levels. ;)
Level 1: Just busy work:Creed,Staind, Aly & AJ. Whatever is on itunes.
Level 2: Semi-busy Semi-thought provoking work:Fall Out Boy,All American Rejects.
